🍊 Small edible orange fruits • 🌸 Fragrant white flowers • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 🌿 Evergreen foliage
The Citrus Calamondin, also known as the Indoor Orange Tree, is a spectacular miniature citrus tree - its small edible bright orange fruits, deliciously fragrant white flowers, and glossy evergreen foliage make it one of the most rewarding plants in the catalogue. Originally from the Philippines and Southeast Asia, it is a natural hybrid between the mandarin and kumquat, cultivated for centuries for its fruit and fragrance. A reliable choice among fruit and aromatic plants.
Unlike the classic lemon tree, it is more compact, more flowering, and adapts perfectly to growing indoors in bright light.
Which Citrus variety should you choose?
The Citrus genus offers several citrus trees suited to growing in a pot. Here is how the Citrus Calamondin compares with other varieties:
- Citrus Calamondin (this plant): compact and highly decorative citrus tree, tangy and bitter small orange fruits suitable for cooking, generous flowering, ideal indoors in bright light or on a balcony. The easiest to grow in an apartment.
- Citrus Lemon: classic lemon tree, standard-sized yellow lemons, generous production, prefers a sunny outdoor location. More demanding in terms of light.
The Calamondin is the ideal choice if you are looking for a compact citrus tree that flowers and produces fruit in an apartment without constraints - much more accommodating than the classic lemon tree.
Light & placement
The Citrus Calamondin is one of the few citrus trees able to thrive indoors in bright light all year round - but light remains the number one factor: without sufficient light, there are no flowers or fruit.
- Light: full sun to partial shade - a minimum of 4 to 6 hours of light per day.
- Ideal for: a south- or west-facing window, conservatory, balcony, or sunny terrace.
- Temperature: 15 to 25 °C all year round, with a minimum of 10 °C in winter.
- Growing medium: special citrus potting soil, rich and well-drained.
Watering & care
- Watering: regular - keep the growing medium slightly moist without ever waterlogging it, especially during fruiting. Water stress is the number one enemy: irregular watering causes fruit drop. Upon arrival, a few simple steps can help you welcome a new plant like your Calamondin.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times a week in summer; reduce in winter.
- Drainage: essential - use a pot with drainage holes and empty the saucer after each watering.
- Fertiliser: every 2 weeks in spring and summer, using a citrus fertiliser rich in nitrogen and iron - citrus trees are hungry feeders, and regular fertilisation makes all the difference.
- Pruning: light pruning at the end of winter to maintain a compact, airy shape.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring, using a slightly larger pot.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its bright orange fruits, which remain on the plant for several months, are enough to create an immediate Mediterranean atmosphere - placed alone in a pot near a glass door or window, it becomes the centrepiece of the room.
- Edible Mediterranean corner: pair it with a Lavanda angustifolia and a trailing Ivy on a sunny balcony - three Mediterranean plants, complementary colours, coordinated fragrances, and compatible care requirements.
- In a Mediterranean urban garden: it creates a harmonious arrangement with plants for balconies and terraces.
- Decorative pot: a terracotta pot or white glazed ceramic highlights the orange colour of the fruit by contrast.
Verdeia tips
- Move it outdoors in summer: the Calamondin loves warmth and will produce more flowers and fruit outdoors - bring it inside as soon as nighttime temperatures fall below 10 °C.
- Pollinate it by hand indoors: without insects, help pollination by passing a dry paintbrush from flower to flower during flowering - it is simple and highly effective for triggering fruit production.
- Watch for pests: scale insects and aphids are attracted to citrus trees - inspect the foliage regularly and treat promptly with soft soap if an infestation occurs.
