Frequently Asked Questions
How tall does a Japanese maple grow in a pot? In a pot, a Japanese maple generally reaches 1.50 to 2.50 meters, depending on the cultivar, with slow growth that allows it to remain in the same container for several years.
When does the Japanese maple change color? The Japanese maple takes on orange, red, or golden hues in October, before losing its leaves for the winter.

🍁 Three Japanese maples with contrasting foliage • 🧡 Orange, green and red • 🌿 Full leaves and lace-like foliage • ⛅ Partial shade to gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to -20 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
This set of 3 Acer palmatum brings together three young Japanese maples with different colours and textures, each in its 12 cm pot: yellow-green foliage edged in orange, finely cut lace-like green foliage and foliage with red young shoots. Native to the forests of Japan and Korea, it is the most accessible way to start a collection of Japanese maples.
Delivered young, at 35 cm tall, each can be planted in a larger pot or in the ground and will grow fuller year after year. The composition may vary depending on availability, while always retaining three cultivars with different foliage.
The three maples in the set
Typical set composition, with each plant bearing its cultivar label:
- 'Orange Dream' — full yellow-green leaves, orange edges and young shoots, golden in autumn. The brightest.
- 'Emerald Lace' — leaves cut into fine emerald-green strips, trailing habit, orange and red in autumn. The most airy.
- 'Beni-maiko' — bright red young leaves that turn green tinged with red, scarlet in autumn. The most colourful.
Which Japanese maple should you choose?
The Japanese maples in the catalogue, with different colours, habits and sizes:
- Set of 3 (this plant) — orange, finely cut green and red, 3 pots Ø12 cm. The most affordable way to get started.
- 'Orange Dream' — orange shoots that turn soft green (3 sizes). The most changeable.
- 'Emerald Lace' — finely cut emerald green foliage, trailing habit (3 sizes). The most airy.
- 'Bloodgood' — purplish red that lasts all summer without turning green (2 sizes). The most stable red.
- 'Atropurpureum' — deep purple turning bronze (3 sizes). The most vigorous.
- 'Sangokaku' — coral red bark in winter (2 sizes). The only decorative one without leaves.
- 'Garnet' — dissected garnet red, trailing growth (H40 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The red dissectum.
- 'Shaina' — brick red in a dense, rounded form, dwarf (2 sizes). The most compact.
- 'Going Green' — bright green with full leaves (2 sizes). The most understated.
Exposure & location
The Japanese maple grows in the understorey in its natural habitat: it likes filtered light and is equally wary of the scorching afternoon sun and dry wind. The cultivar with dissected foliage is the most sensitive of the three.
- Exposure: partial shade or morning sun — bright but gentle light intensifies the orange and red.
- Location: east- or north-facing balcony, sheltered terrace, patio, courtyard — protected from the wind.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C — they remain outdoors all year round and lose their leaves in winter.
- Soil type: fresh, well-draining and acidic — ericaceous soil mixed with potting soil, never calcareous.
Place the cultivar with dissected foliage in the shadiest spot: its fine strips scorch more quickly in the sun than the full leaves of the other two.
Watering & care
Young and in small pots, their roots dry out quickly: the finger test indicates the right time, while a fresh but well-draining substrate prevents both dryness and root suffocation.
- Watering: regular — the substrate should remain moist from April to September, without ever becoming waterlogged; greatly reduced in winter.
- Water: preferably non-limescale — hard water alkalizes the substrate and yellows the foliage over the seasons.
- Mulching: a layer of pine bark on each pot maintains freshness and gently acidifies the substrate.
- Pruning: unnecessary for young plants — remove only dead wood in winter.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for ericaceous plants, once at the beginning of spring.
In a 12 cm pot, the water reserve is limited: in hot weather, check the substrate every day.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Three different-colored foliage plants are enough to create a Japanese-inspired corner, ideal for greening a shady balcony where few colorful plants thrive.
- For a Japanese composition, pair them with a Fargesia rufa — the clump-forming bamboo adds the verticality and evergreen greenery that the maples lack in winter.
- To dress the base of the pots, add a 'Ice Dance' Carex — its fine cream-edged leaves thrive in the same partial shade and contrast with the palmate leaves.
- For winter continuity, place a 'Emerald Gaiety' Euonymus on a stem beside them — its evergreen variegated foliage fills the space when the maples are bare.
- To enhance the pot, choose the taupe Capi Nature Groove pot — its warm shade complements the orange and red tones of the young leaves, while its vertical grooves emphasize the slender form of the young maples.
Arranged in a triangle at different heights, on a step, a stool, and the ground, the three maples create the effect of a small grove from the very first year.
Verdeia Tips
- Repot them upon receipt: a 12 cm pot quickly restricts growth. Place each maple in a 20 to 25 cm pot filled with ericaceous soil and potting soil, after the few days of acclimatization needed to properly welcome a new plant.
- Protect them from hot afternoons: young leaves can scorch within a few hours in the summer sun. Move the pots closer to a wall in the shade or install a light fleece, as with all plants exposed to heatwaves.
- Leave them outside in winter: they need the cold to grow well again in spring. In severe frost, group the pots against a wall and wrap them in winter protection fleece to protect the roots.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
