Acer palmatum 'Shaina' is a dwarf cultivar with brick-red foliage, whose leaves cluster into very dense bunches at the ends of short shoots. A species native to the forests of Japan and Korea, it is the most compact of the Japanese maples in the catalogue.
Its distinctive feature is its compactness: where a classic maple reaches 3 to 5 metres, 'Shaina' tops out at around 1.50 metres, forming a dense, regular ball. It is the only one in the range that can genuinely be grown on a narrow balcony without becoming cumbersome.

The Japanese maple is just as sensitive to scorching sun as it is to dry wind. 'Shaina' fares a little better than the others thanks to its thick, clustered leaves, but full afternoon southern exposure should still be avoided.

Watering & care
Japanese maple roots are shallow and are just as sensitive to drought as to suffocation. A fresh but well-draining substrate is the right combination, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: regular — the substrate should remain fresh from April to September, without ever becoming waterlogged.
- Water: strictly non-calcareous — hard water alkalizes the substrate and causes chlorosis within two or three seasons.
- Mulching: essential in a pot — a layer of pine bark keeps the soil cool and gently acidifies it.
- Pruning: unnecessary — the ball shape is natural to this cultivar, and no intervention can improve it.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for ericaceous plants, once at the beginning of spring.
It is the least demanding maple in the range: a small volume of foliage, slow growth, infrequent repotting, and no pruning required.

- For a contrast in form, pair it with 'Emerald Lace' — a compact red ball against an airy green cascade, the sharpest contrast between two maples.
- To frame an entrance, place two identical ones on either side of the door — their natural regularity makes symmetry easy, something a classic maple does not allow.
- For winter continuity, add a 'Emerald Gaiety' spindle — its evergreen variegated foliage fills the space while the maple is bare.
