🌿 Finely cut, lace-like green foliage • ⬆️ Upright vase-shaped habit • 🍂 Golden to orange in autumn • ⛅ Partial shade to morning sun • ❄️ Hardy down to -20 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Acer palmatum 'Seiryu' has bright green leaves cut into fine strips all the way to the midrib, like maples in the dissectum group, but with a rare characteristic: its branches grow straight up instead of drooping. Native to the forests of Japan and Korea, it is the only Japanese maple with lace-like foliage in the catalogue to form a small upright tree.
Its Japanese name means “blue-green dragon”. Delivered young at 35 cm tall, over the years it develops a 2- to 3-metre vase-shaped silhouette, taller than it is wide, whereas the other finely cut foliage spreads out in a cascade.
Which Japanese maple should you choose?
The Japanese maples in the catalogue, with different colours, habits and sizes:
- 'Seiryu' (this plant) — finely cut, lace-like green foliage, upright vase-shaped habit (H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The only upright dissectum.
- 'Emerald Lace' — finely cut emerald green, weeping habit (3 sizes). The most airy.
- 'Garnet' — finely cut garnet red, weeping habit (H40 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The red dissectum.
- 'Little Princess' — green with pink tips, dwarf and bushy (H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The smallest.
- 'Shaina' — brick red in a dense ball, dwarf (2 sizes). The red dwarf.
- 'Beni-maiko' — pinkish-red shoots on green foliage, red stems (H35 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most contrasting.
- Set of 3 — orange, finely cut green and red, 3 Pot Ø12 cm. The most economical way to get started.
- 'Orange Dream' — orange shoots followed by soft green (3 sizes). The most changeable.
- 'Bloodgood' — purplish red that holds all summer without turning green (2 sizes). The most stable red.
- 'Atropurpureum' — deep purple turning bronze (3 sizes). The most vigorous.
- 'Sangokaku' — coral-red bark in winter (2 sizes). The only ornamental one without leaves.
- 'Going Green' - bright green with entire leaves (2 sizes). The most understated.
Exposure & location
The Japanese maple grows in woodland in its natural habitat and prefers filtered light. 'Seiryu' is nevertheless the most sun- and wind-resistant of the finely cut foliage varieties: its strips scorch much less quickly than those of trailing cultivars.
- Exposure: partial shade or morning sun - it tolerates a few hours of direct sun, but not full afternoon sun from the south.
- Location: terrace, east-facing balcony, patio, courtyard - sheltered from the strongest drafts.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C - it stays outdoors all year round and loses its leaves in winter.
- Soil type: fresh, well-draining and acidic - ericaceous soil mixed with potting soil, never calcareous.
Its upright habit takes up little floor space: this is the lace-leaved maple best suited to a narrow balcony with a high ceiling.
Watering & care
Its shallow roots are just as vulnerable to drought as to suffocation: a fresh but well-draining substrate is the right combination, and leaf drop in November is a normal stage that should not be confused with a plant losing its leaves due to lack of water.
- Watering: regular - the substrate should remain fresh from April to September, without ever becoming waterlogged; greatly reduced in winter.
- Water: preferably limescale-free - hard water alkalizes the substrate and yellows the foliage over the seasons.
- Mulching: a layer of pine bark helps retain freshness and gently acidifies the substrate.
- Pruning: unnecessary - the vase-shaped silhouette forms on its own. Remove only dead wood, in winter.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for ericaceous plants, once at the beginning of spring.
In a 12 cm pot, the water reserve is limited: in hot weather, check the substrate every day.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its upright silhouette of lacy green foliage works well in terrace arrangements alongside sunny balcony plants facing east, where other finely cut foliage would scorch.
- For a Japanese arrangement, pair it with a Fargesia rufa - the clumping bamboo maintains a persistent green screen when the maple is bare in winter.
- To add flowers around the base of the pot, add a Rhododendron Bloombux® Magenta — it thrives in the same ericaceous soil, and its intense pink flowers contrast with the green lace-like foliage.
- For a bright summer, place a Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle' next to it — its large white flower heads brighten partial shade and contrast with the delicate lacy leaves.
- To enhance the pot, choose the taupe Capi Nature Groove pot — its vertical grooves extend the tree's upright habit, and its warm colour echoes the golden hues of autumn.
In October, the foliage changes from green to gold and then reddish orange: this is when its lace-like leaves are most visible when backlit.
Verdeia tips
- Install a stake during the first year: the young trunk is slender and the main stem may bend in the wind. A loosely attached bamboo stick guides its vertical growth until the wood becomes stronger.
- Protect it from scorching afternoons: although it tolerates sun better than other finely divided foliage, its delicate leaves turn brown above 35 °C. Move the pot closer to a shaded wall, as with all plants exposed to heatwaves.
- Repot it in a pot that is taller than it is wide: its upright habit develops deep roots. A container at least 25 cm tall, filled with ericaceous soil and potting compost, ensures its stability as it grows taller.
