Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Strelitzia Reginae and Strelitzia Nicolai? The Reginae produces the iconic orange and blue bird of paradise flowers and stays compact (100–150 cm at maturity). The Nicolai produces white and blue flowers and can reach 200 to 300 cm — it’s the giant version with banana-like foliage. If you want colorful flowers in a medium space, choose the Reginae.
Can you grow a Strelitzia Reginae on a balcony? Yes — it’s actually the ideal spot if your balcony gets plenty of sun. It tolerates a few hours of direct sunlight, enjoys fresh air, and its graphic foliage creates an instant tropical effect outdoors. Bring it inside in winter if temperatures drop below 5 °C in your area.

🌿 Dark green graphic tropical foliage • 🌺 Spectacular orange and blue flowers at maturity • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 2 sizes available
Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise) is a spectacular tropical plant native to South Africa. Its large dark green oval leaves on long elegant petioles create an immediately recognizable graphic and tropical silhouette. At maturity — usually after 3 to 5 years — the plant produces its iconic bright orange and electric blue flowers, among the most spectacular in the tropical plants catalog.
Vigorous and easy to care for, it thrives both indoors in bright light and outdoors on a sunny balcony or terrace — one of the few tropical plants that tolerate direct sun and use it to prepare for flowering.
Which variety of Strelitzia to choose?
The Strelitzia collection offers two varieties with very different characteristics:
- Strelitzia reginae (this plant) — iconic orange and blue flowers, compact to medium size, more accessible flowering. The quintessential flowering version, suitable for most interiors and balconies.
- Strelitzia nicolai — white and blue flowers, very large size (200 to 300 cm), giant banana-like foliage, majestic stature. The XXL version for large spaces.
Exposure & location
Strelitzia reginae needs maximum bright light to develop properly and eventually flower — this is the number one factor. The more light it receives, the more vigorous its growth and the higher the chances of flowering. In a too dark location, it survives but will never flower.
- Exposure: full sun to bright partial shade — tolerates a few hours of direct sun daily.
- Ideal: sunny balcony, terrace, veranda, or living room near a south- or west-facing window.
- Temperature: 15 to 25 °C — tolerates down to 5 °C in winter, frost-free.
- Substrate: rich, well-drained — universal potting soil with perlite or sand.
A south-facing window is its ideal indoor location — a few hours of direct sun daily stimulate growth and prepare flowering much more effectively than permanent indirect light.
Watering & care
Strelitzia reginae tolerates temporary drought well — its rhizomes store water. Excess water is much more dangerous than lack of it. It flowers better when its roots are slightly cramped — do not repot too early and limit pot size increases to avoid delaying flowering. Upon delivery, let it gradually acclimate to its new location before exposing it to full sun. It is also one of the largest indoor plants easiest to integrate into a space thanks to its upright and airy habit.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate surface dry between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and well-draining substrate.
- Fertilizer: every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer with liquid fertilizer for flowering plants.
- Cleaning: gently wipe leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine.
- Repotting: wait until roots come out of the pot — a slightly cramped Strelitzia flowers better than one in a pot that is too large.
The first orange and blue flowers usually appear after 3 to 5 well-established years — the graphic leaves are already very decorative during this period, and flowering, when it occurs, can last several weeks.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its graphic tropical foliage makes an impact well before flowering. It fits equally well in a tropical composition or as a solitary plant in a large pot on a terrace.
- For an XXL tropical composition with complementary foliage, pair it with an Alocasia macrorrhiza and a Philodendron Imperial Green — three large tropical leaves with very distinct shapes (lanceolate/cordate/oval) create a dense and coherent urban jungle. Our tropical combinations guide offers more composition ideas.
- To save time with a ready-made composition, the Monstera + Alocasia + Strelitzia pack groups three complementary tropical plants ready to install together.
- To enhance the dark green foliage in a contrasting pot, the Elho Brussels anthracite decorative pot provides a matte dark background that intensifies the deep green of the leaves and anticipates the contrast with the future orange flowers.
- For an XXL format tropical duo, the Strelitzia nicolai + Alocasia pack offers two large plants already paired for immediate impact in a large space.
Strelitzia reginae is also beautiful outdoors in summer — take it out on the terrace from May to September to give it maximum sun exposure that accelerates growth and prepares flowering for the following years.
Verdeia Tips
- Place it in the brightest spot available: light is the determining factor for flowering — a few hours of direct sun daily in a living room or on a south-facing balcony significantly speed up development and reduce the time before the first orange and blue flowers.
- Do not repot too early: Strelitzia flowers better when its roots are slightly cramped — wait until roots clearly come out of the pot before changing containers, and increase pot size only one step at a time to avoid unnecessarily delaying flowering.
- Take it outdoors from May to September: a summer spent in full sun on a terrace or balcony is the best investment for flowering in the following years — direct summer sun replenishes the plant’s energy reserves much more effectively than even very bright indoor light.
