Frequently Asked Questions
Why water Coffea arabica with non-calcareous water? Calcareous water leaves white deposits on the shiny leaves and disrupts nutrient absorption — filtered or rainwater at room temperature preserves the leaf’s shine and root health.
Is Coffea arabica suitable for a home with pets? It is slightly toxic to pets if ingested — keep it out of reach of cats and dogs as a precaution, although the risk is low with the leaves.

🌿 Persistent glossy dark green foliage • 🌸 Possible fragrant white flowers • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Regular watering • 🏙️ 2 sizes available
Coffea arabica, or the coffee plant, is a tropical shrub native to the highlands of Ethiopia, valued as much for its dense, glossy dark green foliage as for its unique botanical character. Under the right conditions, it can produce small, deliciously fragrant white flowers, followed by red berries containing the famous coffee beans - a rare and fascinating experience for a houseplant.
Easy to care for and naturally compact, it fits perfectly among the houseplants and easy-care plants in the Verdeia catalog.
Light & placement
Coffea arabica thrives in bright but always indirect light - this is the main condition for maintaining dense foliage and encouraging possible flowering. Its ideal placement depends on the balance between light and indoor humidity.
- Light: bright indirect light - near an east- or west-facing window, protected from direct sun during the hottest hours.
- Placement: bright kitchen, living room, office - any well-lit room without prolonged sun exposure.
- Outdoors: a shaded balcony or terrace during the warmer months, protected from wind and temperature fluctuations.
The more intense indirect light Coffea arabica receives, the more likely it is to flower - an east-facing window with a few hours of gentle morning sun is ideal.
Watering & care
Coffea arabica prefers a consistently moist but never waterlogged growing medium. Like Maranta, it is sensitive to limescale - use filtered or rainwater to prevent deposits and brown edges. Watering houseplants should be based on how quickly the growing medium dries, not on the calendar.
- Watering: regular - water as soon as the surface of the growing medium begins to dry, without waiting until it is completely dry.
- Water: limescale-free, at room temperature - limescale causes brown spots on the glossy foliage.
- Humidity: mist the foliage frequently, especially during the heating season.
- Pruning: light pruning in spring is enough to maintain a compact, balanced shape.
- Drafts: avoid them - sudden temperature changes weaken the foliage.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The very glossy dark green foliage of Coffea arabica makes it a structural plant - it provides a dense, luminous backdrop in any tropical arrangement.
- For a contrasting combination of lightness and density, pair Coffea arabica with Asparagus setaceus - the coffee plant's dense, glossy foliage contrasts perfectly with the asparagus's fine, feathery foliage, creating a beautifully balanced composition between volume and lightness.
- For a graphic tropical arrangement, place it alongside Pilea peperomioides and Philodendron campii - Pilea's round leaves and Philodendron's large leaves create a trio of highly complementary textures with Coffea.
- In a terracotta or terracotta ceramic decorative pot, the warm tones of the material naturally complement the foliage's deep, glossy green - Coffea arabica is one of the plants that best enhances handcrafted ceramics.
- For a bold pairing, combine it with Ficus elastica 'Abidjan' - the two plants' glossy dark green foliage create a highly sophisticated monochrome palette, while differences in leaf shape and size add visual interest.
Verdeia tips
- Water with filtered water at room temperature: Coffea arabica is sensitive to limescale, which leaves white deposits on the glossy foliage and interferes with nutrient absorption - filtered or rainwater preserves the foliage's shine and the quality of the growing medium.
- Repot every 2 years in spring in a well-draining growing medium: the coffee plant grows steadily and gradually develops its root system - when roots emerge from the bottom of the pot, move it to the next size with a universal mix enriched with perlite. Repotting in spring is sufficient, using a pot that is only slightly larger.
- Maintain a stable temperature between 18 and 25 °C: Coffea arabica is native to the Ethiopian highlands, where temperatures are mild and stable - cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations cause leaf drop and slow growth.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
