🔴 Bright red stems all winter • 🍂 Red foliage in autumn • 🤍 Small cream flowers in spring • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🐾 Non-toxic to animals • 🌱 Easy to grow
Cornus alba 'Sibirica', or Siberian dogwood, is a deciduous shrub grown for its stems: once the leaves have fallen, from November to March, its young shoots turn a glowing coral red that lights up the garden in the depths of winter. It is a European horticultural selection of a species native to Siberia, Mongolia, northern China and North Korea, grown in Europe since the 18th century.
For the rest of the year, it is covered in green leaves that turn red in autumn, small cream flowers in May-June, then bluish-white berries. Among our mini shrubs & urban perennials, it is the one that brings the most colour to the winter garden.
A shrub that changes with every season
- Winter: bare wood and bright red stems, the time when it is at its most spectacular.
- Spring: young oval green leaves and small cream flowers in flat clusters, in May-June.
- Summer: dense green foliage and bluish-white berries.
- Autumn: the leaves turn red before falling, and the stems regain their colour.
When delivered in winter, it arrives without leaves: this is its natural rest period, and the best time to admire its stems and plant it.
Planting & location
Plant it from October to March, outside frost periods, either in the garden or in a large container for balconies & terraces.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade; the more sun it gets, the more intense the red of the stems.
- Soil type: all soils, preferably moist; it even tolerates wet ground and the edge of a pond.
- Spacing: 1 m between two plants for a border, 60 to 80 cm for a low, colourful hedge.
- In a pot: a container at least 40 cm in diameter, with moist, free-draining potting soil, as explained in our article on substrates.
- Hardiness: down to at least -20 °C, without protection.
Plant it where the winter sun passes behind it late in the day: backlit, its red stems seem to glow.
Watering & care
Once established in the garden, rainfall is all it needs. In a pot, keep the potting soil moist from spring to autumn.
- Watering: regular in the first year and in pots, especially in summer; in the garden, only during prolonged drought.
- Pruning: in March, cut the stems back to 10-20 cm above the ground every one or two years; the young shoots are the reddest.
- Fertilizer: a little compost at the base in spring is enough.
- Mulching: a layer of bark keeps the soil cool in summer.
If you don't want to cut everything back, remove a third of the oldest stems at ground level each March: the shrub stays bushy and always well coloured.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its red stems give structure to a winter border, and it pairs just as well with evergreens as with early bloomers.
- For a green backdrop all year round, place it next to a standard bay laurel — the evergreen foliage makes the red stems stand out in winter.
- For late-winter blooms, pair it with a Magnolia stellata standard — its white flowers open in March on bare wood, right next to the red stems.
- For a blue carpet in spring, underplant it with Armenian grape hyacinth — its bright blue spikes bloom in March-April, just as the dogwood comes back into growth.
- For a terrace version, plant it in the Elho Greenville Round pot in white — the white of the pot makes the red stems stand out.
Cut in winter, a few red stems make beautiful decorative branches in a vase or a Christmas wreath.
Verdeia tips
- Plant in groups: three plants set one metre apart form a patch of red visible from afar in winter.
- Don't forget the March pruning: without it, the stems age, turn brown and the shrub loses its brilliance.
- For cold gardens: it is one of our cold- and frost-resistant plants, and stays colourful even under snow.
- With pets: find it among our non-toxic outdoor plants for pets.
