🤍 Almond-green flower heads, then pure white, then bright green • 📅 Flowering from June until the first frosts • 🌘 Shade to partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 💐 Flowers for cutting and drying • 🪴 Compact, rounded habit
Hydrangea macrophylla Magical® Noblesse is the white hydrangea in the Magical® series, whose flowers change colour throughout the flowering season. European horticultural selection (the Netherlands), grown at the Kolster nursery, it is one of the hydrangeas in the catalogue best suited to shade plants: it flowers against a north-facing wall.
Its flower heads open almond green in June, turn pure white in July and August, then turn green again in September, sometimes with red or blue hues depending on the soil, before developing a papery texture in autumn. Delivered 55 cm tall in a 23 cm pot with 6 to 10 flower heads, it remains decorative until the first frosts.
Which hydrangea should you choose?
The Hydrangea varieties in the catalogue do not have the same flowering or the same uses:
- Magical® Noblesse (this plant) - almond green, then pure white, then bright green. The best suited to shade.
- Forever & Ever® - repeat-flowering: it blooms again on the current year's shoots, even after a harsh winter or a failed pruning. The safest choice for flowering every year.
- Magical® Revolution - flowers that change colour from July to October, an award-winning variety recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society. The most spectacular in late summer.
- Magical® Jewel - starts lime green and finishes purple-red. The most contrasting variety in the series.
- Magical® Greenfire - flaming pink and green. The most tolerant of full sun.
- 'Strong Annabelle' - Hydrangea arborescens with large flower heads on sturdy stems, to be cut back hard every winter. The hardiest.
- Hydrangea petiolaris - the only climbing variety, perfect for covering a wall in the shade.
Exhibition & placement
Noblesse is made for corners that most flowering plants avoid: against an east- or north-facing wall, its white stays pure and its flowers last longer than in the sun.
- Exposure: light shade to partial shade, never scorching afternoon sun.
- Location: courtyard, at the foot of a north- or east-facing wall, shaded terrace, sheltered from cold, drying winds.
- Hardiness in a pot: very hardy - a winter fleece protects the buds during severe cold.
- Soil type: deep, moist, well-drained and non-calcareous.
The red or blue hues at the end of the season depend on the soil: in acidic soil, they lean blue; in neutral potting soil, they lean red.
Watering & Care
In the shade, the hydrangea drinks less than in the sun but cannot tolerate drying out: testing the substrate with your finger prevents watering out of habit, while a pot that remains waterlogged in the shade eventually causes suffocated roots.
- Watering: regular - twice a week in summer in the shade, more often in hot weather, greatly reduced in winter.
- Water: preferably rainwater, as Noblesse prefers non-calcareous soil.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for flowering plants or ericaceous plants, from March to July.
- Pruning: remove faded flowers in March, just above the first pair of buds.
- Repotting: into a wider pot the following spring, using a mixture of potting soil and ericaceous compost.
Keep the flowers until autumn: their return to green and paper-like texture are part of the variety's charm.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
Its white and green bring light where it is lacking: it structures a shady balcony better than any bright color.
- For a blue and white duo, pair it with Forever & Ever® Bleu - the same size, the same exposure, and the blue highlights the purity of the white in midsummer.
- For a woodland composition, plant a Korean Fern at its base - its dark green, finely divided foliage extends the green of the flowers at the end of the season.
- For winter continuity, place a Laurustinus next to it — evergreen, it extends the white theme with its flowering from November to March.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — the dark gray makes the white stand out, whereas a light-colored pot would make it disappear.
Its flower heads can be cut fresh in July or dried in October, for bouquets in pure white or autumn green.
Verdeia tips
- Place it where nothing else blooms: a north-facing wall or a courtyard without direct sun suits it perfectly, and its white remains visible until dusk.
- Avoid lime: Noblesse prefers non-calcareous, moist soil. A suitable substrate, a mixture of potting soil and ericaceous soil, ensures steady growth.
- Protect it from cold winds: more than frost, it is the drying winter winds that damage the buds. A sheltered spot or winter fleece is sufficient.
