❤️ Large raspberry-red flower heads • 🔁 Repeat flowering from June to October • 🌸 Delivered in bud, 7 to 12 flower heads • ⛅ Partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -25 °C • 🪴 Compact habit, ideal for a pot
Hydrangea macrophylla Forever & Ever® Rouge is a big-headed hydrangea from a repeat-flowering series: it flowers both on the previous year's wood and on the current year's shoots. A European horticultural selection, it has the most intense colour among the outdoor flowering plants in the catalogue, with flowering that continues to renew until October.
Where a classic hydrangea remains flowerless if frost or overly severe pruning has removed the previous year's buds, Forever & Ever® produces flowers again on its new shoots. Delivered in bud, standing 55 cm tall in a 23 cm pot, it bears 7 to 12 flower heads that open pale green before turning raspberry red.
Which hydrangea should you choose?
The Hydrangea varieties in the catalogue do not all have the same flowering or uses:
- Forever & Ever® (this plant) — repeat-flowering: it flowers again on the current year's shoots, even after a harsh winter or an incorrect pruning. The safest choice for flowering every year.
- Magical® Revolution — flowers that change colour from July to October, an award-winning variety from the Royal Horticultural Society. The most spectacular in late summer.
- Magical® Jewel — starts lime green and ends deep purplish red. The most contrasting in the series.
- Magical® Greenfire — pink with green flames. The most tolerant of full sun.
- Magical® Noblesse — almond green, then pure white, then bright green. The best suited to shade.
- Magical® Ruby Tuesday — from green to deep red. The deepest red in the series.
- 'Pink Annabelle' — Hydrangea arborescens with large flower heads on sturdy stems, to be cut back hard every winter. The hardiest.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — the only climber, ideal for covering a wall in the shade.
Forever & Ever® is also available in Blue, Pink, White and Violet.
Exposure & location
Red is the colour most affected by afternoon sun: the petals burn and turn brown at the edges, whereas in partial shade they retain their vibrancy for several weeks.
- Exposure: partial shade, morning sun or light afternoon shade.
- Location: east- or north-west-facing terrace, entrance, base of a wall, shady courtyard.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -25 °C — it can stay outdoors in winter.
- Soil type: moist, rich, neutral to slightly alkaline — this is what preserves the red colour.
In front of a light-coloured wall, the red stands out more than amid lush vegetation, where it blends into the greens.
Watering & care
The hydrangea is one of the most water-hungry shrubs in the catalogue, and a lack of water quickly shows on its leaves: browning edges or leaves falling in midsummer indicate a substrate that is too dry.
- Watering: plentiful and regular — every two to three days in summer, much less in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable — the limescale even helps keep the red colour.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for flowering plants, from March to July — avoid fertilisers for blue hydrangeas, which contain aluminium sulphate.
- Pruning: remove faded flowers just above the first pair of buds, in March.
- Repotting: into a wider pot the following spring, using potting soil for flowering plants.
Removing faded flowers during the summer encourages the production of new flower heads on the current year's shoots.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
A red this rich catches the eye from a distance: choosing the right exposure for each plant allows you to pair it with neighbours that enhance it without competing with it.
- For a bold contrast, pair it with Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle' — same exposure, same water requirements, and the pure white makes the red even more vivid.
- For a colour echo, place a Photinia 'Little Red Robin' on a stem behind it — its red young shoots echo the colour of the flowers above, while its evergreen foliage takes over in winter.
- To dress the base, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' at the edge of the pot — its cream edging brings light beneath the large dark flower heads.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Skin anthracite pot — the dark grey gives the red a depth that terracotta, too similar in tone, would stifle.
Let the last flowers dry on the plant in autumn: they take on burgundy tones and remain decorative all winter.
Verdeia tips
- Keep the soil neutral: in ericaceous soil, the hydrangea absorbs aluminium from the soil and the red turns purple. Potting soil for flowering plants and tap water are enough to preserve the original colour.
- Never cut the stems in autumn: the dried flowers protect the buds from the cold. Wait until March to remove them.
- Leave it outside in winter: hardy down to -25 °C, it needs the cold to flower again properly. In a pot, a few precautions against frost are enough, such as raising the pot so that it does not remain in the water.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
