💜 Large deep-violet flower heads • 🔁 Repeat flowering from June to October • 🌸 Delivered in bud, 7 to 12 flower heads • ⛅ Partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -25 °C • 🪴 Compact habit, ideal in pot
The Hydrangea macrophylla Forever & Ever® Violet is a big-headed hydrangea from a repeat-flowering series: it flowers both on the previous year's wood and on the current year's shoots. European horticultural selection, it is the rarest shade among the plants to grow in partial shade in the catalog, with flowering that continues to renew until October.
Where a classic hydrangea remains flowerless if frost or overly severe pruning has removed the previous year's buds, Forever & Ever® forms flowers again on its new shoots. Delivered in bud, standing 55 cm tall in a 23 cm pot, it bears 7 to 12 flower heads that open pale green before turning violet.
Which hydrangea should you choose?
The Hydrangea varieties in the catalog do not all have the same flowering or uses:
- Forever & Ever® (this plant) — repeat-flowering: it flowers again on the current year's shoots, even after a harsh winter or incorrect pruning. The safest choice for flowering every year.
- Magical® Revolution — flowers that change color from July to October, a variety awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society. The most spectacular in late summer.
- Magical® Jewel — starts lime green and finishes deep blue. The most contrasting in the series.
- Magical® Greenfire — pink streaked with green. The most tolerant of full sun.
- Magical® Noblesse — almond green, then pure white, then bright green. The best suited to shade.
- Magical® Ruby Tuesday — from green to intense red. The deepest red in the series.
- 'Pink Annabelle' — Hydrangea arborescens with large flower heads on sturdy stems, to be cut back hard every winter. The hardiest.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — the only climber, perfect for covering a wall in the shade.
Forever & Ever® is also available in Blue, Pink, Red, and White.
Exposure & location
Purple is a dark color that gets lost in dense shade and fades in strong sun: soft, bright light, without direct afternoon sun, brings out its full depth.
- Exposure: partial shade, morning sun, or light afternoon shade.
- Location: east- or northwest-facing terrace, entrance, base of a wall, shaded courtyard.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -25 °C — it stays outdoors in winter.
- Soil type: cool, rich, and slightly acidic — this is what keeps the purple deep.
In front of a light-colored wall or beside white flowers, the purple stands out; against a dark hedge, it disappears.
Watering & care
The hydrangea is one of the most water-hungry shrubs in the catalog: in a pot, checking the moisture with your finger every two days in summer prevents thirst stress, and yellow leaves between the veins indicate water that is too hard.
- Watering: generous and regular — every two to three days in summer, much less in winter.
- Water: rainwater preferably — hard water makes the purple turn pink.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for ericaceous plants, from March to July.
- Pruning: remove faded flowers just above the first pair of buds, in March.
- Repotting: into a wider pot the following spring, using a mix of potting soil and ericaceous compost.
Removing faded flowers during the summer encourages the production of new flower heads on the current year's shoots.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Purple is a characterful color that needs light-colored neighbors to express itself, especially on a partially shaded balcony where the light is already filtered.
- For luminous contrast, pair it with Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle' — same exposure, same water requirements, and the white makes the purple sing.
- To dress the base, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' at the edge of the pot — its cream edging brightens the base of the large dark flower heads.
- For a graphic backdrop, place a Fargesia 'Moontears' behind it — a non-running bamboo whose fine, light foliage highlights the mass of dark flowers.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Groove taupe pot — its warm shade softens the purple, whereas a black pot would darken it.
Leave the last flowers to dry on the plant in autumn: they take on plum tones and remain decorative throughout the winter.
Verdeia tips
- Add ericaceous soil: a slightly acidic growing medium deepens the purple, while alkaline soil shifts it towards pink. A mixture of potting soil and ericaceous soil is enough to preserve the original colour.
- Never cut the stems in autumn: the dried flowers protect the buds from the cold. Wait until March to remove them.
- Water in the morning, at the base: wet foliage in the evening encourages powdery mildew, while morning watering prepares the plant for the heat of the day.
