🍏 Yellow-green apples washed with red • 🌸 White-pink blossom in April • 🌳 Already trained tree • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Hardy down to -25 °C • 🍂 Deciduous foliage
The Malus domestica 'Jonagold' produces large yellow-green apples extensively washed with red, with firm, juicy and sweet-tart flesh. A species originating in the mountains of Central Asia, this American cultivar, a cross between 'Golden Delicious' and 'Jonathan', is one of the most widely grown in Europe and a classic among the catalogue's fruit trees.
Its distinctive feature is its keeping quality: harvested in October, Jonagold keeps until February in a cool place, whereas many garden apples are eaten within a month. Delivered at H90 cm in a Pot Ø21 cm, the tree is already grafted and trained.
Which apple tree should you choose?
Two varieties in the catalogue, complementary for both harvesting and pollination:
- 'Jonagold' (this plant) — large yellow-green apples washed with red, firm, sweet-tart flesh, keeps until February. The most productive for large fruit.
- 'Elstar' — medium-sized red-and-green apples, very fragrant and crisp flesh, earlier harvest (H90 cm | Pot Ø21 cm). The most aromatic.
These two varieties pollinate each other: 'Elstar' is the natural pollinator of 'Jonagold', which cannot fruit on its own.
Sun exposure & location
An apple tree needs full sun for the fruit to ripen and develop colour. In partial shade, the tree grows and flowers, but the apples remain green, small and sour.
- Exposure: full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sun per day.
- Location: garden, large terrace, south-facing balcony — plan for a pot at least 40 cm in diameter when fully grown.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -25 °C — winter cold is essential for fruiting.
- Soil type: deep, rich and well-draining — planting soil amended with compost.
'Jonagold' is triploid: its pollen is sterile. It needs another apple tree nearby to fruit and cannot pollinate itself.
Watering & care
A fruit tree in a pot consumes much more water than one planted in the ground, where its roots can reach far. A rich, well-draining substrate supports production, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: regular from April to September — two to three times a week in summer, especially while the fruit is swelling.
- Drainage: essential — never leave standing water in the saucer.
- Pruning: in February, outside freezing periods — open up the center and shorten the previous year's shoots.
- Thinning: in June, keep only one apple per cluster — this is what makes the difference between many small fruits and a few beautiful apples.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for fruit trees, when the buds break and then after flowering.
A natural drop of young fruit in June is normal: the tree regulates its own fruit load; it is not a symptom.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
An apple tree offers three highlights throughout the year: pale pink-and-white blossoms in April, colorful fruit in September, and bare branches in winter. On a balcony, it is the tree that gives a season the most structure.
- To ensure pollination, pair it with the ‘Elstar’ apple tree — essential here, as ‘Jonagold’ cannot pollinate itself.
- To stagger the harvests, add an ‘Opal’ plum tree — plums in late July, apples in October, two harvests that do not overlap.
- To fill the winter space, place a BetterBuxus® ball-shaped topiary beside it — its evergreen mass fills the space while the apple tree is bare.
- To enhance the pot, a terracotta or natural-fiber container keeps the substrate cool during the fruiting period.
The April flowering is highly nectar-rich: an apple tree attracts pollinators across the entire balcony, which also benefits other fruit trees.
Verdeia tips
- A second apple tree is essential: 'Jonagold' is triploid, and its pollen is sterile. Without another apple tree flowering at the same time within a few dozen metres, you will have flowers but no fruit.
- Thin in June: keep only one apple per flower cluster. The tree uses fewer of its reserves, the remaining fruit are noticeably larger, and you avoid alternate bearing, in which a heavy crop one year is followed by no harvest the next.
- Prune in February, when there is no frost: opening up the centre of the tree allows light to reach the fruit and limits disease. Pruning while the sap is flowing causes sap to run and weakens the wounds.
