💜 Purple and white flowers • 🌳 For shade and partial shade • 🌿 8 to 35 cm depending on species • 🌤️ Flowers from March to May • 🐝 Bee-friendly crocuses early in the season • ❄️ Very hardy • 🔁 Naturalises and reflowers every year • 📏 Bulbs size 10/12
This shade bulb mix brings together three species that flower without full sun: purple 'Ruby Giant' crocuses, white glory-of-the-snow and fragrant pheasant's eye daffodils. Planted together in autumn, they flower in successive waves from March to May, from small stars at ground level to 35 cm white flowers with a red eye. It is a European horticultural selection, supplied as size 10/12 bulbs for the largest.
At the foot of trees, in light woodland, along a north-facing wall or in a shady lawn, it brings colour where few flowers thrive. Among our flower bulbs, it is the mix designed for shady corners; for sunny beds, discover the red, blue and white mix.
What is in this mix?
- Crocus 'Ruby Giant' (Crocus tommasinianus) — star-shaped purple flowers, 8 to 10 cm, in March, from late February in mild climates. It opens the season and feeds the first bees.
- White glory-of-the-snow (Chionodoxa luciliae 'Alba') — small pure white stars, 10 to 15 cm, in March and April. It self-seeds and brightens dark areas.
- Pheasant's eye daffodil 'Recurvus' (Narcissus poeticus) — fragrant white flowers with a yellow, red-rimmed eye, about 35 cm, from late April to May. It closes the season.
Under deciduous trees, these bulbs flower before the canopy closes: they make the most of the spring light, then go dormant in the summer shade.
How many bulbs should you choose?
The small crocus and glory-of-the-snow bulbs are planted close together and the daffodils further apart: allow about 50 bulbs per square metre, or 20 to 25 bulbs in a 40 cm diameter pot.
- 50 bulbs: about 1 m², or two large pots on a shady balcony or terrace.
- 100 bulbs: about 2 m², to bring flowers to the foot of a tree or hedge.
- 200 bulbs: about 4 m², for a shady bed or a north-facing border.
- 400 bulbs: about 8 m², to naturalise a lawn under trees or a light woodland area.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 400 pack works out at less than half the price per bulb of the 50 pack.
Planting & location
The bulbs are planted from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowers from March to May.
- Exposure: partial or light shade, ideally under deciduous trees; avoid the dense, permanent shade of conifers.
- Depth: 5 to 8 cm for crocuses and glory-of-the-snow, 12 to 15 cm for daffodils, pointed end up.
- Spacing: 5 cm between small bulbs, 10 cm between daffodils; in pots, they can almost touch.
- Soil type: moist, rich in humus and well drained, like a woodland soil; only standing water harms them.
- Hardiness: down to about -20 °C in the ground, like the species in our selection of cold-hardy plants; no protection is needed.
At the foot of a tree, slip the bulbs between the roots with a dibber, without cutting the large roots: a layer of compost on the surface is enough to cover them.
Watering & care
In the ground, autumn and spring rain is enough, as the soil stays moist in the shade. In pots, use a free-draining compost and never let it become waterlogged.
- Watering: low — at planting, then in pots when the surface of the mix is dry, especially when the buds appear.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground, where decomposing fallen leaves feed the bulbs; in pots, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: leave those of the crocuses and glory-of-the-snow so they self-seed; cut off the daffodil flowers once withered.
- After flowering: let the foliage yellow for six weeks before cutting it back: it feeds the bulbs for the following year.
In autumn, leave the fallen tree leaves over the bulbs: they form a natural mulch that the shoots push through easily in spring.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its pale flowers light up dark corners of the garden and large pots in the shade, as shown in our guide to plants for a shady balcony.
- To bring flowers to the same spot from winter, plant the Christmas rose 'Christmas Carol' nearby — its large white flowers open from December to February, before the first crocuses.
- To add blue in March and April, mix in the Grecian windflower mix — its small blue, pink and white daisies, 10 to 15 cm tall, flower at the same time as the glory-of-the-snow, in partial shade.
- For a shady terrace version, plant 20 to 25 bulbs in layers in a 40 cm pot — daffodils at the bottom, crocuses and glory-of-the-snow on top, following the method in our guide to planting bulbs in pots in autumn.
The white of the glory-of-the-snow and daffodils stays bright even on grey days: it is the colour that shows up best in a shady corner.
Verdeia tips
- Plant in generous handfuls: for a natural woodland effect, plant in groups of 10 to 20 bulbs rather than in regular rows.
- Mark the spot: insert a small stake or note the outline of the area, so you do not damage the bulbs when digging in summer, once the foliage has gone.
- Wait before mowing: in a lawn, wait until the daffodil foliage has yellowed, around late June, before mowing the planted area.

FAQ – Everything to know before adopting your Verdeia plant
How are my plants prepared before shipping?
All our plants are selected from our European partner nurseries. Before shipping, they are watered, cleaned, and protected with breathable, secure packaging. Each package is designed to ensure your plant arrives in perfect health, without any transport-related stress.
Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
