Frequently Asked Questions
Can the 'Caroline' wisteria grow in a pot on a balcony? Yes, in a large container at least 30 cm in diameter and depth with a sturdy support — water regularly during the first two years and follow the double pruning schedule to encourage abundant flowering.
What is the difference between Wisteria sinensis and Wisteria floribunda? Sinensis blooms before the leaves with short, highly fragrant clusters, while floribunda blooms at the same time as the leaves with often longer clusters — two distinct floral shapes for different effects.

🌸 Long fragrant purple hanging clusters • 🌿 Vigorous climber • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to −15 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Wisteria sinensis 'Caroline' is a purple wisteria native to China, famous for its long clusters of delicately scented mauve flowers that cascade from spring onwards. It transforms walls, pergolas, and balconies into truly poetic scenes.
Hardy down to −15 °C and very vigorous, it improves year after year — the older it gets, the more abundant and spectacular its blooms become.
Which Wisteria variety to choose?
The Wisteria genus includes two main species with different characteristics. Here’s how Wisteria sinensis 'Caroline' stands out from other varieties in the catalog:
- Wisteria sinensis 'Caroline' (this plant) — very fragrant purple clusters, early flowering before leaves, very vigorous. The classic purple version with the strongest scent.
- Wisteria sinensis 'Prolific' — abundant blue-violet clusters, early and repeat flowering, very floriferous. The most floriferous blue version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' — very long white clusters delicately scented, slightly later flowering. The classic pure white version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Rosea' — pale pink very fragrant clusters, elegant habit. The romantic pink version.
- Wisteria floribunda 'Naga Noda' — exceptionally long double purple clusters, very spectacular. The most sumptuous purple version.
Exposure & location
'Caroline' wisteria loves light and warmth — full sun or bright partial shade, ideally south or west facing for maximum flowering. Like all wisterias, its roots need space and depth. Provide a very sturdy support from planting: an adult wisteria can weigh several tens of kilos.
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade — ideally south or west facing.
- Support: pergola, wall, arch, balcony — must be solid and well anchored.
- Soil: ordinary, deep, and well-drained — avoid soils too rich in nitrogen.
- In a pot: large container at least 30 cm in diameter and depth.
Wisteria sinensis flowers before leafing — its clusters appear on bare wood in early spring, which visually distinguishes it from Wisteria floribunda that flower simultaneously with the leaves.
Watering & care
'Caroline' wisteria is undemanding once established. Water regularly for the first two years to encourage rooting, then gradually space out. Pruning is essential care — twice a year to stimulate flowering and control vigor. Cuttings taken in summer root easily. If leaves yellow out of season, check drainage and nutrient supply.
- Watering: regular for the first two years, moderate afterwards.
- Summer pruning: July-August — shorten new shoots to 5–6 leaves.
- Winter pruning: January-February — shorten the same shoots to 2–3 buds.
- Fertilizer: never nitrogen — it promotes leaves at the expense of flowers.
If your wisteria does not flower, check two points: too much nitrogen in the soil and insufficient sunlight — these are the almost exclusive causes of a leafy wisteria without flowers.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The fragrant purple clusters of Wisteria 'Caroline' create a Mediterranean and romantic atmosphere. Its early flowering on bare wood — before the leaves — offers a unique floral display from early spring.
- For a two-tone wisteria duo, the white Wisteria floribunda 'Alba' complements the purple Caroline on the same support — the two colors contrast elegantly and flower slightly staggered for a prolonged bloom.
- To frame the wisteria with a complementary scent, the Honeysuckle 'Halliana' extends the fragrant season from June to September — when the wisteria rests after its great spring flowering.
- For a pink and purple balcony trellis, the Climbing Rose Crazy in Love Pink dialogues with the purple wisteria for a very romantic two-tone floral composition on the same railing.
- To dress the base of a wall in persistent white, the Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' evergreen foliage complements the wisteria which loses its leaves in winter — a duo that dresses the support all year round.
Verdeia Tips
- Install the support before planting: an adult wisteria is a heavy and powerful plant capable of deforming or tearing light structures — pergolas, arches, or trellises must be firmly anchored from the start, before planting.
- Strictly follow the double pruning schedule: prune in July-August to 5–6 leaves, then prune in January-February to 2–3 buds — this biennial rhythm triggers abundant spring flowering, not light alone.
- Guide the main stems from the first year: direct and tie the main stems in the desired direction from planting — once woody, they twist irreversibly and become impossible to redirect without breaking.
