Frequently Asked Questions
What is reversion on variegated ivy? Reversion is the appearance of stems with fully green leaves without variegation — these stems are genetically more vigorous and should be removed at the base as soon as they appear to preserve the two-tone foliage.
Can 'Goldheart' ivy grow in the shade? Yes, but the golden yellow variegation gradually fades in full shade — bright partial shade is the ideal exposure to maintain intense and vibrant two-tone foliage all year round.

🌿 Dark green foliage with a golden yellow heart all year round • 🧲 Clings by itself — no additional support needed • ☀️ Light sun to shade • ❄️ Hardy down to –20 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
Hedera helix 'Goldheart', or golden heart ivy, is an ornamental selection of common ivy, native to Europe, distinguished by its spectacular two-tone foliage: each dark green leaf features a large bright golden yellow patch in the center. This evergreen variegation lights up dark walls and challenging exposures like no other climber in the climbers and ground covers collection.
Vigorous, self-clinging thanks to its adhesive roots, and hardy down to –20 °C, it’s a reliable choice to sustainably dress a wall or fence on a balcony or terrace, even in shaded locations.
Which ivy to choose?
Verdeia offers several ivies with distinct foliage. Here’s how to place the 'Goldheart' among the varieties in the catalog:
- Hedera helix 'Goldheart' (this plant) — dark green foliage with a golden yellow heart, evergreen, clings by itself. The choice to bring light to a dark wall or shaded exposure.
- Hedera helix — uniformly glossy dark green foliage, more vigorous growth. The reference for a dense and fast green screen in any exposure.
- Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata' — very large variegated green and cream leaves, fast coverage. The choice for a bold graphic effect over a large area.
- Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo' — large gray-green leaves edged with cream, Mediterranean habit, less hardy. The choice for a lush effect on a sheltered south-facing wall.
Exposure & location
The 'Goldheart' tolerates all exposures, but it is in bright partial shade or light sun that the golden yellow variegation is most intense and luminous — in dense shade, the golden patches fade and the foliage turns a more uniform green. Its adhesive roots cling by themselves to porous surfaces.
- Exposure: light sun to partial shade for optimal variegation — tolerates shade but the golden color fades.
- Clinging: self-clinging on stone, brick, rough concrete — trellis needed on smooth surfaces.
- Soil: any well-drained type — tolerates poor and calcareous soils.
- In a pot: container at least 20 cm, ordinary well-drained substrate.
In intense full sun, the yellow areas may slightly brown in midsummer — bright partial shade preserves the brightness of the variegation throughout the season.
Watering & care
Like all ivies, 'Goldheart' is very self-sufficient once rooted. In a pot, the finger test is enough to gauge watering — the substrate should dry slightly between waterings. If leaves lose their variegation or yellow unexpectedly, the causes of yellowing are often overwatering or lack of light.
- Watering: moderate — allow to dry slightly between waterings, never let water stagnate.
- Pruning: in spring to guide growth, in autumn to contain spread — also prune stems that regrow fully green (reversion) to preserve variegation.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground — light organic feeding in spring if potted.
- Reversion: immediately remove fully green stems as they appear — they are more vigorous and would quickly overtake the variegated foliage.
Reversion — the appearance of fully green stems without variegation — is natural on variegated ivies; remove them at the base as soon as you spot them to maintain the two-tone foliage.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The green and gold two-tone foliage of 'Goldheart' stands out as a compositional element in its own right — in a contemporary Mediterranean garden as well as in an outdoor jungle, it brings a brightness that few other evergreen plants can offer in shade or partial shade.
- For a bright, shaded, and flowering wall, pair it with Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle'® at the base — the hydrangea’s white spherical blooms and the ivy’s golden patches create a very elegant green-white-gold palette in shaded corners where few plants flower.
- For an all-season balcony trellis, combine it with Lonicera 'Serotina' on the same support — the ivy provides a persistent golden background in winter when the honeysuckle is bare, then the honeysuckle takes over with its fragrant pink flowers from June to September.
- To enhance the brightness of the golden foliage, a midnight blue or anthracite ceramic pot creates the most striking contrast — the dark background intensifies the brightness of the yellow patches and highlights the dark green of the leaves.
- For a graphic ground cover under a tree or in a shaded bed, let 'Goldheart' carpet the ground paired with climbing Lonicera henryi behind — two layers of evergreen vegetation, two textures, and two complementary green palettes.
'Goldheart' is especially spectacular in autumn and winter, when neighboring plants have lost their leaves — its two-tone foliage then takes center stage and brightens the space when it’s most precious.
Verdeia Tips
- Immediately remove fully green leafy stems: reversion is natural on variegated ivies — a green stem is genetically more vigorous than variegated stems and would smother them in a few seasons if allowed to develop.
- Expose it to bright partial shade rather than full shade: the golden yellow variegation is a genetic trait that expresses better with light — in full shade, leaves gradually turn green and lose most of their decorative interest.
- Prune twice a year to thicken variegated foliage: a short pruning stimulates the growth of many new variegated shoots that strengthen the two-tone effect — an unpruned plant elongates, stems stretch, and foliage becomes less dense and less bright.
