Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves of my Aglaonema turning yellow? Yellowing is almost always due to overwatering. Reduce the frequency and make sure the pot has proper drainage. Lower leaves yellowing individually is normal — it’s a natural renewal of the foliage.
Is Aglaonema an air-purifying plant? Yes, Aglaonema is among the indoor plants recognized for their ability to filter certain indoor air pollutants. This is a valuable benefit for offices and poorly ventilated spaces.

🌿 Medium green foliage marbled with silver • 🌑 Tolerates low light • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm • 🌬️ Air-purifying • ⚠️ Toxic to pets
The Aglaonema 'Maria Christina', also known as the Chinese Evergreen, is a tropical plant native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia. Its large, oval medium-green leaves, elegantly marbled with light silver variegation along the veins, create subtle, refined foliage - less contrasting than bicolour varieties, but with a gentle, soothing elegance. H40 cm | Pot Ø14 cm.
Air-purifying, tolerant of low light, and easy to care for. Pair it with other Aglaonemas.
Which Aglaonema variety should you choose?
The Aglaonema genus comes in a wide variety of foliage types. Here are the available profiles:
- Aglaonema 'Maria Christina' (this plant) - soft medium green marbled with silver, compact growth. The most understated and soothing.
- Aglaonema 'Silver Queen' - very silver foliage on a green background, with strong contrast. The most silver.
- Aglaonema 'Jungle Silver' - highly contrasting, graphic silver foliage, large format. The most graphic.
- Aglaonema 'White Joy' - green and creamy white foliage, very bright. The brightest.
- Aglaonema 'Spring Red' - vibrant pink and green foliage. The most colourful.
- Aglaonema 'Romeo' - dark green leaves variegated with silver and cream. The most balanced.
Other Aglaonemas varieties are available - Silver Bay, Greenlight, Keylime, BJ Freedman, and more.
Light & placement
- Ideal light: moderate to low indirect light - office, hallway, or dimly lit room.
- Tolerates: low light and artificial lighting alone.
- Avoid: direct sun, which can burn and discolour the leaves.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C, away from draughts.
Like all Aglaonemas, Maria Christina is one of the most shade-tolerant plants - a valuable asset for low-light spaces. This tolerance makes it one of the easiest plants for city dwellers, well suited to small spaces.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate - let the top 2-3 cm of the substrate dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, every 2 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air - no misting needed.
- Fertiliser: diluted liquid fertiliser for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
The Aglaonema prefers being under-watered to being over-watered. When in doubt, always wait one more day. The frequency of watering should be adjusted to the season.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its understated foliage and soft silver highlights make it a plant that fits in anywhere without ever dominating the composition.
- In the office: compact and tolerant of low light, it is ideal for a workspace - air-purifying, decorative, and low-maintenance.
- In a composition: pair it with an Aglaonema Spring Red for a striking contrast between silver-green and vivid pink - the same family, identical care, and a strong visual effect.
- Ideal pot: white, grey, or terracotta matt ceramic - neutral tones enhance the silver highlights of the foliage.
Combine several Aglaonema varieties to create a varied composition with the same care requirements.
Verdeia tips
- Very easy for beginners - the Aglaonema is one of the most forgiving plants. It tolerates missed waterings, low light, and dry air without complaint.
- Excess water is its only real risk - constantly wet substrate leads to root rot. Wait until the top few centimetres are dry before watering. Most problems can be identified quickly with a good diagnosis.
- ⚠️ Toxic to pets - contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of cats and dogs. In a pet-friendly home, it is better to choose from pet-compatible plants.
