Frequently Asked Questions
How to grow ivy denser and bushier? Regularly prune overly long stems—cut just above a leaf node. Each cut stimulates the growth of 2 to 3 new side shoots. Without pruning, ivy produces long, sparse stems. With regular pruning every 2-3 months, it becomes dense and lush.
Is Hedera ivy toxic to cats and dogs? Yes, ivy contains irritating saponins that are toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of your pets. When hung high, it is naturally less accessible—this is a practical advantage of its trailing habit.

🌿 Glossy dark green foliage • 🎋 Cascading trailing habit • ☀️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🪴 White hanging pot included • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
Hedera Helix 'Groen', or Trailing Ivy, is a climbing plant with a trailing habit and flexible stems that gradually lengthen to create a cascading effect. Its glossy dark green foliage with classic lobed leaves is one of the most recognisable among houseplants. Delivered with its white hanging pot - ready to hang without any additional accessories.
Tolerant of low light, air-purifying and fast-growing - this is one of the most versatile plants in our selection of hanging and trailing plants. Please note: toxic if ingested by animals.
Which ivy variety should you choose?
Each Hedera has a distinct profile - solid green, variegated or graphic foliage, with a trailing or climbing habit. Here are the available profiles:
- Hedera Helix 'Groen' with white hanging pot (this plant) - glossy dark green foliage, white hanging pot included, ready to hang. The most ready-to-use solution.
- Hedera helix - the same classic dark green foliage, H65 cm format, without a hanging pot. The versatile climbing or trailing version.
- Hedera helix 'Goldheart' - green leaves with golden-yellow variegation at the centre. The brightest.
- Hedera algeriensis 'Gloire de Marengo' - large tricolour leaves in green, grey and cream. The most sophisticated.
- Hedera colchica 'Dentata Variegata' - very large green and cream variegated leaves. The most imposing.
Other climbing plants complement this selection, including Pittsburgh with its deeply lobed leaves.
Exposure & placement
Hedera Helix 'Groen' is one of the most low-light-tolerant plants among trailing plants - a valuable asset for hanging planters in poorly lit spaces.
- Ideal exposure: partial shade to soft indirect light — a north- or east-facing window, hallway, or bright bathroom.
- Tolerates: low light and cool temperatures (10–21 °C) — less demanding than most tropical plants.
- To avoid: intense direct sun, which burns the leaves and dries out the stems.
- Substrate: light universal potting soil with perlite.
Ivy thrives in cool rooms — a temperature between 15 and 18 °C suits it perfectly and even slows the proliferation of its main pests (spider mites).
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate slightly moist without ever waterlogging it.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in spring and summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: the included white hanging pot has drainage holes — empty the saucer after watering.
- Humidity: occasionally mist the foliage, especially in dry conditions.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month in spring and summer.
- Pruning: regularly prune stems that are too long to maintain a compact shape and encourage branching.
Ivy is susceptible to spider mites in dry, warm conditions — regular misting and a cool location are the best preventive measures. The watering frequency should be adjusted to the season: more frequent in summer and much less frequent in winter.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
When hanging, Hedera Helix 'Groen' creates a cascading plant effect that brings life to the vertical spaces often overlooked in interior decor.
- Hanging: hang it near a north- or east-facing window — its stems will gradually lengthen and trail down to create a curtain of foliage.
- In a vertical arrangement: pair it with a Pothos or a Scindapsus in a hanging pot for a suspended plant wall with complementary foliage.
- Pot included: the white hanging pot fits into every style — minimalist, Scandinavian, bohemian. No additional accessories needed.
Over time, its stems can reach 100 to 150 cm — a plant that evolves and transforms from one season to the next.
Verdeia Tips
- Prune regularly to make it bushier — without pruning, ivy produces long, sparse stems. Regularly pruning stems that are too long encourages branching and creates a denser, bushy habit.
- Watch for red spider mites — this is the main risk for ivy indoors, especially in summer heat and dry conditions. They appear underneath the leaves (fine webbing, orange spots). Mist it regularly and place it in a cool spot to help prevent them.
- Acclimatise it upon delivery — leave it for 48 hours in a temperate room before hanging it in its final location. The first few days matter: a few simple steps can help you welcome a new plant.
- Can climb with a support — if you prefer a climbing habit rather than a trailing one, attach its stems to a trellis or support — it will naturally cling to it.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals and humans — contains irritating saponins. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs and young children. In a household with pets, it is best to choose from the plants and animals that are compatible.
