Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sansevieria really purify the air? The 1989 NASA study showed that Sansevieria absorbs certain volatile compounds like formaldehyde and benzene. The amounts remain modest in a typical apartment — consider it a beneficial complement rather than a substitute air purifier.
Why are my Sansevieria’s leaves soft? Soft, limp leaves almost always indicate chronic overwatering and the start of root rot. Remove the plant from its pot, cut away black and soft roots, let it dry for 48 hours before repotting in fresh, very well-draining soil.

🌿 Graphic dark green cylindrical leaves • 🎨 Compact growth in a dense rosette • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • 💧 Very little watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 📏 H35 cm | Ø12 cm
The Sansevieria 'Fernwood Punk', also known as the snake plant, is a compact, graphic succulent native to the arid regions of West Africa. Its dark green cylindrical leaves, marked with subtle horizontal stripes, grow in a dense, upright rosette - a minimalist, modern sculptural effect, perfect for a desk, shelf, or contemporary corner.
Air-purifying, virtually indestructible, and ideal for low-maintenance spaces. Pair it with other Sansevierias and bedroom plants.
Which Sansevieria variety should you choose?
The Sansevieria genus offers a wide variety of shapes and sizes - here are the varieties available in our catalog:
- Sansevieria 'Fernwood Punk' (this plant) - compact cylindrical leaves, a dense rosette growth habit, H35 cm. The miniature sculptural version.
- Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' - slender cylindrical leaves with a taller upright growth habit. The slender and graphic version.
- Sansevieria 'Mikado' - tall, slender cylindrical leaves with a spectacular upright growth habit. The tall and slender version.
- Sansevieria 'Whitney' - short, flat leaves with silver stripes and a compact growth habit. The classic compact version.
- Sansevieria 'Moonshine' - light silvery-green, flat leaves with a unique, luminous color. The silvery version.
- Sansevieria 'Black Coral' - very dark green, flat leaves with an elegant, dark appearance. The dark and graphic version.
- Sansevieria zeylanica - broad, flat leaves with spectacular silver stripes and an imposing growth habit. The classic XXL version.
Why choose the Fernwood Punk? Its compact size (H35 cm) and cylindrical leaves make it the perfect graphic accent for a desk or shelf - a sculptural presence in a very small format.
Light and placement
The Sansevieria Fernwood Punk is one of the most tolerant plants there is — it adapts to almost any light conditions, from full sun to shade.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — tolerates shade, but growth will be slower.
- Ideal: desk, shelf, bedroom, living room or bright bathroom.
- Temperature: 15 to 30 °C — tolerates fluctuations; avoid frost.
- Substrate: very well-draining — cactus and succulent potting soil with perlite.
The brighter the light, the faster the growth and the more intense the stripes — but it will survive without any problem in a dimly lit room.
Watering & care
Sansevieria prefers to be forgotten — it is better to underwater than overwater. Excess water is the only real way to kill it. Always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering again.
- Watering: low — let the substrate dry out completely between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air — no misting necessary.
- Fertilizer: every 4 to 6 weeks in spring and summer with diluted liquid cactus fertilizer.
In winter, watering once a month is enough — or even less if the plant is in a cool place. The roots rot much faster in winter than in summer.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its cylindrical leaves create a minimalist sculptural effect that flat leaves cannot replicate — an accent plant that structures a space without cluttering it.
- Pairing: pair it with an Aloe vera or a graphic succulent for a contemporary arid composition — same aesthetic, same needs, simplified group care.
- Ideal pot: matte ceramic decorative pot (white, gray, black) or concrete — a matte pink Groovy pot Ø13 cm creates an unexpected and elegant contrast with the leaves' dark green.
- Atmosphere: perfect on a shelf or minimalist desk, in a bedroom or modern living room — its compact silhouette fits anywhere without ever overwhelming the space.
The cylindrical leaves create a spectacular interplay of shade and light — particularly visible with side lighting in the evening.
Verdeia tips
- Excess water is the only real danger — always wait until the substrate is completely dry before watering. If in doubt, wait another week. A Sansevieria that receives no water for a month will survive without any problem — a Sansevieria whose roots rot will not. This habit is the foundation of good watering.
- Ideal for the bedroom — like all Sansevieria, Fernwood Punk produces oxygen at night while continuing photosynthesis via crassulacean acid metabolism. This rare quality makes it one of the best plants for improving air quality in a bedroom. Its benefits for indoor air are detailed in the analysis plants and air quality.
- Easy to propagate by division — when repotting, gently separate the clumps into several plants. Each division will root easily in a new pot with well-draining substrate.
- The leaves curve slightly — this is natural and part of Fernwood Punk's graphic charm. It is not a sign of stress, unlike flat-leaved Sansevieria, whose drooping indicates a lack of water.
