Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Begonia maculata and Begonia maculata 'Wightii'? 'Wightii' is a selected variety of Begonia maculata with even denser and more contrasting silvery white spots — same care, same shape, but even more graphic foliage.
Why do the leaves of my Begonia maculata have brown spots? Brown spots on the leaves are almost always caused by water splashing on the foliage during watering — always water directly into the soil at the base of the plant to avoid this problem.

🌿 Silver-white spots on deep green • 🌺 Burgundy red underside • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌸 White flowering
Native to the tropical forests of Brazil, the Begonia maculata is one of the most graphic indoor plants — its deep green asymmetrical leaves are dotted with irregular silver-white spots on top, while the underside reveals a bright burgundy red. In addition to this spectacular two-sided foliage, it produces delicate cascading clusters of white flowers. Discover our full Begonias collection and our flowering indoor plants.
Which Begonia variety to choose?
Three Begonia varieties are available in our catalog:
- Begonia maculata (this plant) — deep green leaves speckled with silver-white and burgundy red underside, white clustered flowers (H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most graphic and spectacular version.
- Begonia maculata 'Wightii' — same characteristic spotted foliage, selected variety for even more pronounced and contrasting spots (H20 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The version with the densest spots.
- Begonia 'Betulia Candy' — abundant bright pink flowering, compact and bushy habit (H35 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most floriferous version.
Light & location
- Light: bright indirect light to bright partial shade — good brightness enhances the white spots and promotes flowering, never direct sun that burns the leaves.
- Ideal: bright living room, office, east or north-facing windowsill, bright bathroom.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, without sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-drained — potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite.
Watering & care
- Watering: moderate — let the top 2 to 3 cm of substrate dry out between waterings. Always water at the base, never on the leaves — leaf moisture causes spots and promotes fungal diseases.
- Frequency: about 1 to 2 times per week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and saucer.
- Humidity: prefers 50–60% humidity — increase ambient humidity with a humidifier rather than direct misting.
- Fertilizer: every 2 to 3 weeks in spring-summer, diluted liquid fertilizer.
- Pruning: pinch stems to encourage branching and a compact shape — regularly remove dead leaves.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- At eye level: placed on a console or shelf at eye height, the burgundy red underside of the leaves becomes visible along with the spotted top — this location reveals the full color richness of this plant.
- With graphic foliage: pair it with a Calathea with contrasting veins — two very graphic foliages that complement without competing, for a sophisticated tropical atmosphere composition.
- Ideal pot: a Gabriel burgundy ceramic echoes the leaf undersides for a very elegant monochrome pairing, or a white decorative pot with relief for maximum contrast with the deep green and white spots.
Verdeia tips
- Pinch stems regularly: Begonia maculata tends to stretch toward the light — pinching the tips every 3 to 4 weeks stimulates branching and keeps a compact, bushy habit rather than spindly stems.
- Propagate easily: cut a stem with 2 to 3 leaves and place it in a glass of water in indirect light — propagating plants by cuttings is especially easy with this species, which roots in 2 to 3 weeks.
- Encourage flowering with light: bright, stable indirect light is the main condition to get clusters of white flowers — understanding your plants’ life cycle helps anticipate flowering periods.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
