🎭 Irregular white marbling • 🤍 Almost entirely white young shoots • 🌿 Evergreen all year round • 🌳 Trained on a stem • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -20 °C
Euonymus fortunei 'Harlequin' stands out with its splashed variegation: the creamy white is not limited to an edge but irregularly spreads across the leaf blade, with each leaf creating a different pattern. Native to Japan, it is the lightest-colored of the evergreen terrace shrubs.
Its distinctive feature is its young shoots: they emerge almost entirely white, then become marbled with green as they grow. The crown therefore always displays two layers, pale tips and a greener center, giving it depth.
Which standard Euonymus should you choose?
Three cultivars trained on a stem, with very different variegation:
- 'Harlequin' (this plant) — irregular creamy-white marbling, almost white young shoots. The most contrasting version.
- 'Emerald Gaiety' — green edged with creamy white, pinkish highlights in winter (H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The brightest version.
- 'Emerald 'n' Gold' — green edged with golden yellow, red tones in winter (H90 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The warmest version.
Light & location
The high proportion of white makes this cultivar less vigorous than other euonymus: areas without chlorophyll do not participate in photosynthesis. Good light is therefore more important here than elsewhere.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — choose a bright position, as the white variegation limits growth.
- Location: terrace, entrance, pathway, balcony — particularly effective in a dark corner that it brightens.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-drained — Euonymus adapts to almost all substrates.
It is the slowest-growing of the three euonymuses in the catalog: its broad white areas naturally reduce its vigor, which also limits the need for pruning.
Watering & care
Euonymus is one of the most tolerant shrubs in the catalog. A well-draining growing medium is sufficient for growing it in a pot, and the foliage always signals a problem before it worsens.
- Watering: moderate — once or twice a week in summer for this pot volume, and much less in winter.
- Drainage: essential — never leave water standing in the saucer.
- Pruning: once a year in May is sufficient, as growth is slower than in other euonymuses.
- Green shoots: remove those that return entirely green, as they are much more vigorous and quickly overtake the variegation.
- Suckers: remove shoots that appear along the trunk, as they ruin the standard form.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for shrubs once at the beginning of spring.
'Harlequin' reverts more easily than other euonymuses: monitoring green shoots is especially important here.
Decorating ideas & plant combinations
It is the lightest of the evergreens in the catalog: on a terrace, it creates an almost white mass that brightens a dark corner all year round.
- For a trio of Euonymus, line it up with 'Emerald Gaiety' and 'Emerald 'n' Gold' — the same growth habit, with three complementary variegations.
- For maximum contrast, place an 'Etna' cherry laurel next to it — the solid deep green makes the marbled white stand out.
- For a light duo, add a Eucalyptus 'Azura' — marbled white and blue-gray create an unusual cool palette outdoors.
- To frame an entrance, place two identical plants on either side of the door, in matching containers — symmetry works all year round with an evergreen.
In front of a dark wall or an evergreen hedge, the white marbling creates a bright effect that no flowering can replace in winter.
Verdeia tips
- Keep a close eye on green shoots: 'Harlequin' reverts more easily than other spindle trees. A branch that has reverted entirely to green is much more vigorous than the rest and can dominate the crown within one season if it is not cut at its base.
- Place it in a bright position: its broad white areas do not produce energy. Unlike classic spindle trees, it genuinely suffers in a position that is too dark, where its growth almost stops.
- Prune sparingly: its slow growth means that one annual pruning, in May, is sufficient. Cutting it back more heavily weakens it without improving its shape.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
