Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for a Beaucarnea to develop its swollen trunk? The caudex develops very slowly over several decades — each centimeter of trunk represents years of growth, which explains the decorative value of a well-developed specimen like this H60 cm size.
Can a Beaucarnea be placed outdoors in summer? Yes, it’s even beneficial — gradually expose it to the sun from May to September to avoid sunburn; its natural Mexican habitat is sunny, and a season outdoors strengthens the trunk and foliage vigor.

🌿 Sculptural swollen trunk • ☀️ Bright light • 💧 Very rare watering • 🌵 Ultra easy • 🐾 Non-toxic
Native to the semi-desert regions of Mexico, the Beaucarnea recurvata develops a swollen base trunk — the caudex — which stores water and allows it to survive long droughts. Its nickname "Elephant Foot" comes from the shape of this distinctive trunk, topped with a tuft of long, thin, arching leaves that resemble a plant fountain. It is one of the most sculptural silhouettes in our collection of original and rare plants and our indoor cacti and succulents.
Which sculptural plant to choose?
Beaucarnea is part of a group of graphic architectural plants that share a high tolerance for drought and bright light:
- Beaucarnea recurvata (this plant) — sculptural swollen trunk and tuft of fine drooping leaves, slow growth (H60 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most sculptural and unique version.
- Yucca elephantipes — 3 stems — upright trunks topped with rosettes of stiff dark green leaves, very upright habit (H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm). The most structured and architectural version.
- Sansevieria Dragon — upright cylindrical dark green leaves striped with light green, very graphic compact habit (H55 cm | Pot Ø14 cm). The most compact and minimalist version.
- Sansevieria Laurentii — large flat dark green leaves edged with yellow, slender upright habit. The most classic and well-known bicolor version.
Light & location
- Light: bright light to moderate direct sun — Beaucarnea is one of the few indoor plants that enjoys a few hours of direct sunlight. The more it receives, the more its trunk develops and its leaves grow vigorous.
- Ideal: near a south- or west-facing window, bright veranda, very bright living room.
- Temperature: 15 to 28 °C — tolerates heat but is sensitive to frost.
- Substrate: very well-draining — special cactus mix (cactus soil, perlite, sand).
Watering & care
- Watering: very low — allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings. Its caudex stores reserves for several weeks — knowing when to water is the only real skill required; overwatering is the main cause of trunk rot.
- Frequency: every 3 to 4 weeks in spring-summer, once a month or less in winter.
- Drainage: absolutely essential — pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate.
- Humidity: perfectly tolerates dry air — no need for misting.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer, diluted liquid fertilizer.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
- Solo as a plant sculpture: its unique swollen trunk deserves a prominent and clear spot — placed alone in a bright corner of a living room or entrance, it immediately draws the eye and sparks conversation, where large sculptural plants have the most impact.
- With graphic plants: pair it with an upright Yucca 3 stems and a compact Sansevieria Dragon — three very different architectural silhouettes that share the same need for bright light and very little watering.
- Ideal pot: a Brussels white highlights the organic shape of the trunk by contrasting with its regular roundness, or a Bfor anthracite for a darker, more modern atmosphere.
Verdeia tips
- Never water if in doubt: with Beaucarnea, forgetting to water is always better than overwatering — the caudex stores reserves for several weeks and a rotting trunk is irreversible.
- Gradually move it outdoors in summer: used to full sun in its natural Mexican habitat, it benefits from outdoor exposure from May to September — acclimate it gradually to avoid sunburn on foliage used to indirect light.
- Be patient with its growth: Beaucarnea is a very long-lived plant — its trunk develops over several decades and each centimeter of caudex represents years of slow growth, which explains its rarity and decorative value.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
