Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between panicle hydrangeas and classic hydrangeas? Panicle hydrangeas produce cone-shaped flowers, tolerate sun, are more resistant to cold, and their color does not depend on the soil.
How tall does a Limelight hydrangea grow? It reaches 1.50 to 2 m in height in the ground, and a little less in a pot.

🍋 Large lime-green then creamy-white panicles • 📅 Flowers from mid-July to mid-October • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🐝 Attracts pollinators • 🎨 Colour independent of soil type
Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight' is a panicle hydrangea bred in 1986 by nurseryman Pieter Zwijnenburg in Boskoop. A European horticultural selection (the Netherlands), it is one of the few hydrangeas suited to the full-sun plants in the catalogue, provided it is watered regularly.
Its large cone-shaped panicles open lime green in July, turn creamy white in August, then take on pink and dusty pink tones in September-October. It flowers about a month earlier than classic panicle hydrangeas. Delivered as a young 50 cm plant in a 17 cm pot, it forms a dense, upright shrub within a few seasons.
Which hydrangea should you choose?
The Hydrangea varieties in the catalogue do not all have the same flowering or uses:
- Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight' (this plant) — lime-green then white panicles, in the sun or partial shade. The most vigorous and most tolerant of sun.
- Forever & Ever® — big-headed hydrangea, repeat-flowering, in partial shade. The safest choice for flowering every year.
- Magical® Revolution — large flower heads that change colour from July to October. The most spectacular in late summer.
- 'Strong Annabelle' — Hydrangea arborescens with large white flower heads on sturdy stems. The most compact of the very hardy varieties.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — the only climbing variety, for covering a wall in the shade.
Exposure & location
Unlike big ball hydrangeas, panicle hydrangea loves light: its stems are strongest and its panicles most numerous in the sun.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — at least four to five hours of sun per day.
- Location: terrace, sunny balcony, border, informal hedge, or as a standalone plant in a large container.
- Hardiness in a pot: very hardy — it stays outdoors all winter without protection.
- Soil type: moist, rich and well-drained — whether alkaline or acidic, the color does not change.
The lime green of the panicles is more pronounced in partial shade; in full sun, they turn white more quickly.
Watering & care
In the sun, the panicle hydrangea drinks more than in the shade: checking the substrate with your finger prevents dry spells, and leaves falling in midsummer almost always signal a lack of water.
- Watering: regular — two to three times a week in summer when grown in a pot, less often in the ground once established.
- Water: the water from the tap is suitable.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for flowering shrubs, from March to July.
- Pruning: cut the stems back by one-third in February-March, above a pair of buds — it flowers on the current year's shoots.
- Repotting: into a large container the following spring, or into the ground.
A shorter pruning produces fewer panicles, but larger ones; light pruning produces a taller, more floriferous shrub.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its lime green pairs with almost every color and brightens a full-sun terrace, where other hydrangeas scorch.
- For a seasonal duo, pair it with Hidcote Blue Lavender — the same exposure, and the lavender's purple brings out the green of the panicles in July.
- For a light backdrop, place a Fargesia rufa behind it — a non-running bamboo whose fine foliage highlights the mass of flowers.
- For foliage contrast, place a Photinia 'Carré Rouge' on a stem next to it — its red shoots echo the pinkish tones the panicles take on in autumn.
- To enhance the pot, choose the taupe Capi Nature Groove pot — a warm shade that complements the lime green as well as the old rose of autumn.
Cut in September, the panicles dry very well upside down and retain their pinkish tones all winter.
Verdeia tips
- Prune it at the end of every winter: unlike big-ball hydrangeas, it flowers on new wood. Pruning in February-March removes no flowers and stimulates flowering.
- Give it sun: in the shade, its stems become elongated and bend under the weight of the panicles. Four to five hours of sun are enough to keep an upright habit.
- Leave it outdoors in winter: very hardy, it is not affected by frost, even in a pot. Cold-hardy plants are all cared for the same way in pots: raise the container and avoid standing water.
