Frequently Asked Questions
Can a crocodile fern grow in a bathroom? Yes, it’s actually the ideal spot — the natural humidity after showers perfectly replicates its tropical habitat conditions and keeps the textured fronds shiny and flexible without extra misting.
Why do the tips of a crocodile fern’s fronds turn brown? It’s almost always due to hard water or dry air — switch to filtered or rainwater and increase misting frequency to stop the issue on the sensitive veined fronds.

🐊 Unique "crocodile skin" texture • 🌿 Bright green ribbed and embossed fronds • 🌤️ Partial shade to indirect light • 💧 Likes humidity • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H30 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Microsorum musifolium 'Crocodyllus', also known as the crocodile fern, is a fascinating epiphytic fern native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia. Its long, deep bright green fronds are covered with very pronounced, embossed ribs that create a spectacular texture reminiscent of reptile skin — a unique natural ornamentation that few indoor plants can replicate with such precision and relief.
Non-toxic to pets, the Microsorum 'Crocodyllus' is the only indoor fern to feature this reptile skin embossed texture — all other species in the fern collection have smooth or wavy fronds, never so deeply ribbed.
Which Microsorum variety to choose?
Verdeia offers two Microsorum with very distinct shapes and textures:
- Microsorum 'Crocodyllus' (this plant) — embossed fronds with very pronounced ribs, spectacular crocodile skin texture, compact size 30 cm. The most textured and graphic of the two.
- Microsorum diversifolium — cut and lobed fronds with very varied shapes, elegant and more sculptural form, medium size 45 cm. The choice for a fern with more airy cut shapes.
Light & placement
The crocodile fern enjoys partial shade and soft indirect light — its bright green fronds maintain their texture and shine away from direct sunlight. Its tolerance for high ambient humidity makes it one of the best ferns for bathrooms and high humidity spaces.
- Light: indirect to partial shade — protected from direct sun which burns the fronds and dulls the embossed texture.
- Ideal locations: bright bathroom, kitchen, temperate living room, office — anywhere with naturally present ambient humidity.
- Avoid: dry air, cold drafts, and direct sunlight.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C.
A tray filled with moist clay pebbles under the pot creates a constant humid microclimate around the fronds — this is the most effective method to maintain the shiny embossed texture without risking root rot.
Watering & care
The crocodile fern prefers a substrate that is constantly slightly moist — it does not tolerate dry substrate unlike succulents. Hard water quickly browns the tips of the textured fronds, as with all tropical indoor ferns.
- Frequency: about once a week — water when the substrate surface starts to dry.
- Water: non-hard water at room temperature — filtered or rainwater to preserve the fronds' shine.
- Humidity: 60 to 80% — mist regularly, especially in winter near heating.
- Drainage: essential — pot with drainage holes and light, well-draining substrate.
- Fertilizer: a liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half in spring and summer.
- Pruning: remove yellowed or damaged fronds at the base to encourage new growth.
The embossed ribs collect dust faster than smooth leaves — gently wipe the fronds with a damp cloth once a month to maintain the characteristic relief and shine of the crocodile texture.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The sculpted texture of the crocodile fern makes it a very original accent plant — its embossed and ribbed fronds create a strong visual dialogue with smooth foliage and polished surfaces in contemporary interiors, in tropical compositions that play on texture contrasts.
- For a fern composition with very varied textures, pair the crocodile fern with a Nephrolepis Green Lady and a Platycerium bifurcatum — the embossed texture of the Microsorum, the very dense cascading foliage of the Nephrolepis, and the sculpted antler-shaped fronds of the Platycerium create three radically different fern textures in one arrangement.
- For a very soft tropical texture contrast, pair it with a Calathea Orbifolia and a Syngonium White Butterfly — the embossed texture of the Microsorum, the large striped round leaves of the Orbifolia, and the pearly arrow-shaped leaves of the Syngonium create three very complementary textures with the same partial shade tolerance.
- In a bright bathroom, the crocodile fern benefits from the natural humidity after showers — place it on a shelf or ledge and its embossed fronds will gain optimal relief and shine without any extra misting effort.
- In a natural ceramic decorative pot or woven basket, raw organic materials complement the natural texture of the fronds — choose a matte untreated ceramic decorative pot for a very natural and authentic look that highlights the unique relief of the foliage.
Verdeia tips
- Use only filtered or rainwater: the embossed ribs of the Microsorum Crocodyllus capture and accumulate lime deposits much more visibly than smooth leaves — hard tap water permanently stains the relief and dulls the bright green shine of the fronds with no remedy once deposits are set.
- Maintain high ambient humidity year-round: the crocodile fern is particularly sensitive to the dry air of heated apartments — a tray of moist clay pebbles under the pot or a nearby humidifier is essential in winter to keep the textured fronds vibrant and supple.
- Repot every 2 years in spring with a light, well-draining mix: the Microsorum develops a progressive root system — a potting mix for green plants enriched with perlite ensures drainage while maintaining root moisture. The steps of indoor fern repotting fully apply here.
