🌿 Glossy, fleshy green foliage • 🌑 Tolerates low light • 💧 Minimal watering • 📏 H15 cm | Pot Ø11 cm • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 🐾 Non-toxic
Peperomia Obtipan is a compact tropical plant native to the forests of South America. Its thick, glossy, bright green leaves allow it to store the water — which is why it is perfectly happy with very infrequent watering and tolerates low-light spaces with ease. Size D11 x H15 cm, ideal for an office, shelf, or bedside table.
One of the easiest plants in our catalog — non-toxic, air-purifying, and highly tolerant of missed waterings.
Which Peperomia variety should you choose?
The Peperomia genus is one of the most diverse — shapes, colors, and textures vary greatly from one variety to another. Here are the most distinctive profiles:
- Peperomia Obtipan (this plant) — glossy, fleshy green foliage, compact H15 cm growth | Pot Ø11 cm. The most classic and understated.
- Peperomia Hope — soft green trailing foliage, ideal for hanging. The only trailing variety.
- Peperomia Caperata 'Rosso' — dark green, textured foliage with red undersides. The most textured and the most two-toned.
- Peperomia Napoli Nights — dark, almost black foliage with purple highlights. The most dramatic.
- Red 'Red Canyon' Peperomia — spectacular burgundy-red foliage. The most colorful.
Other varieties of Peperomia are available — Raindrop, Sarcophylla, Burning Bush, Rana Verde and more.
Exposure & placement
Peperomia Obtipan is one of the most accommodating houseplants — it tolerates conditions in which many other decorative plants would fail.
- Ideal exposure: moderate to low indirect light — indoor office, shelf, dimly lit room.
- Tolerates: relative shade, artificial light only, dry air.
- To avoid: direct sun, which burns the fleshy leaves.
- Temperature: 18–24 °C, without sudden fluctuations.
- Substrate: light, airy, and well-draining - universal potting soil with perlite.
Its fleshy leaves store water like a succulent - this allows it to survive in low-light conditions and with infrequent watering, when other plants would become leggy.
Watering & care
- Watering: minimal - let the substrate dry out completely between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once every 2 weeks in spring and summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: a drainage hole is essential - the fleshy leaves store water, while the roots quickly rot in waterlogged substrate.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air perfectly - no misting needed.
- Fertilizer: highly diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once every 2 months in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine.
Peperomia is the ideal plant for those who forget to water - its fleshy leaves form a natural water reserve. Excess water is its only real risk. Proper watering should be adjusted according to how quickly the substrate dries, preventing overwatering.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The compact size and understated foliage of the Peperomia Obtipan make it an ideal background plant - it adds structure to an arrangement without overpowering it.
- As part of a shelf arrangement: pair it with a Napoli Nights or a Rosso to play with color and texture contrasts in the same compact format.
- On a desk: its D11 x H15 cm size and minimal requirements make it the ultimate desk plant - sufficient artificial light and very infrequent watering.
- Ideal pot: matte white, gray, or terracotta ceramic - neutral tones enhance the glossy green without competing with it.
Group several compact Peperomia varieties together to create a cohesive plant collection - they have the same requirements, with highly varied foliage.
Verdeia tips
- Excess water is its only real risk - its fleshy leaves store the water like a succulent. Constantly damp substrate causes root rot within a few weeks. Wait until the substrate is dry before watering.
- Yellowing and falling leaves: overwatering - this is the most common sign of watering too regularly. Immediately reduce the frequency and allow the substrate to dry out completely.
- Wilting leaves: lack of water - rarer with Peperomia, but possible after being neglected for a long time. Moderate watering will help the plant recover quickly.
- Repot rarely - Peperomia thrives when snug in its pot. Repot only every 2 to 3 years in spring, in a slightly larger pot.
- 🐾 Non-toxic - completely safe for dogs and cats. In a pet-friendly home, more ideas can be found among these compatible plants and pets.
