This multi-trunk Pachira aquatica brings together four to five trunk cuttings planted in the same pot, each cleanly cut at the top and crowned with new shoots bearing palmate leaves divided into five leaflets. Native to the wetlands of Mexico, Central America and northern South America, it is one of the most frequently gifted lucky plants.
Its difference from the braided-trunk Pachira is entirely structural: here, the trunks remain straight, independent and visible down to the base, with their brown bark and visible pruning scars. The result is more raw and natural than a braid, with foliage distributed across several tiers rather than forming a single crown.
Light & placement
Like all forms of Pachira, this one needs plenty of filtered light. Direct sun burns the leaflets, while a room that is too dark causes the shoots to become elongated and the foliage between the trunks to thin out.
- Light: bright indirect light — an east- or west-facing window, or two metres from a south-facing window with a sheer curtain.
- Placement: living room, office, bright entrance hall — away from radiators and air-conditioning vents.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C — minimum 12 °C; very sensitive to cold spells.
- Soil type: light and well-draining — universal potting soil mixed with perlite or coconut fibre.
Since the trunks are independent, those facing the light fill out faster than the others: turning the pot a quarter turn every two weeks is enough to balance the overall shape.
Watering & care
Pachira's fleshy roots store water: waterlogged soil makes them rot much faster than missed watering weakens them. The foliage always gives warning signs first, provided you know how to read the signals it sends.
- Watering: moderate — let the top 3 centimetres of soil dry out, approximately every 8 to 10 days in spring and summer, and every 3 weeks in winter.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes, clay pebbles at the bottom, and a saucer emptied after each watering.
- Base of the trunks: keep dry — water must never stagnate around the crown, where the trunks emerge from the soil.
- Cold: a cold draught causes a sudden leaf drop — the plant will recover if you act quickly after a cold spell.
- Fertiliser: liquid fertiliser for green plants, diluted to half strength, once a month from April to September only.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring, in a slightly wider pot — never bury the trunks deeper than they were previously.
If one trunk becomes soft at the base while the others remain firm, remove it completely: rot spreads from one trunk to another through the soil.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
The visible brown bark and exposed cut tops give this form a distinctly hardier character than the braided version. It pairs well with raw materials and warm colour palettes.
- For a light tropical corner, pair it with an Areca Palm with fine, arching fronds — the flexible fronds soften the stiffness of the cut trunks.
- For a duo of symbolic plants, place a ZZ Plant with dark, glossy foliage beside it — two plants reputed to bring good luck, with similar watering needs.
- To highlight its raw character, place the pot inside a whitewashed wooden decorative pot with visible grain — wood against wood, the same material in two finishes.

This size can be placed on the floor beside a sofa or on a low piece of furniture; since the trunks are short, most of the plant's volume is concentrated in its upper half.
Verdeia tips
- Leave the cut tops exposed to the air: the clean sections at the top of the trunks heal on their own and need neither sealant nor protection. Covering them traps moisture and instead encourages the wood to rot.
- Keep it away from cold sources: a poorly insulated window in winter, an entrance door or an air-conditioning vent can cause all the foliage to drop within a few days. This is the leading cause of defoliation in this species.
- Thin out overly dense shoots: each trunk produces several offshoots that eventually compete for space. Removing the weakest ones in spring concentrates the plant's energy on three or four shoots per trunk and opens up its silhouette.
