Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the fronds of a Phlebodium Blue Star gradually turn green? It’s a sign of insufficient light — move the plant to a brighter spot with indirect light and the new fronds will regain their characteristic intense blue-green shade.
Is the Phlebodium Blue Star easy to propagate? It multiplies by dividing the rhizomes in spring — gently separate a clump with roots, repot it in a light fern substrate, and keep humidity high for the first few weeks.

💙 Unique velvety blue-green fronds • 🌑 Tolerates partial shade • 💧 Regular watering • 🌫️ Likes humidity • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 7 sizes available
The Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star', also known as the blue fern, is an epiphytic fern native to the tropical forests of Central and South America that captivates with a unique color in the plant world — a powdery blue-green with silvery reflections that brings freshness and serenity to contemporary interiors. Its broad, wavy fronds with a slightly velvety texture create a soothing and immediately striking visual effect.
Non-toxic to pets and tolerant of partial shade, it stands out among the most original indoor ferns in the catalog and in the non-toxic plants for low light collection.
Which bluish fern to choose?
Verdeia offers two Phlebodium with distinct silhouettes:
- Phlebodium aureum 'Blue Star' (this plant) — broad, wavy, and velvety fronds of intense blue-green, compact and dense habit. The most robust and spectacular variety due to the intensity of its color.
- Phlebodium Davana — finer, more dissected fronds of a lighter bluish shade, with a more airy and slender habit. The choice for a more delicate and graphic effect.
Light & placement
Phlebodium Blue Star is one of the few ferns that truly tolerates partial shade — this is its main advantage for low-light interiors, as detailed in our guide on plants for dark rooms. Our guide on light and humidity for indoor plants helps you find the optimal placement.
- Light: bright indirect to partial shade — protected from direct sun which burns the fronds and dulls their bluish color.
- Ideal locations: bright bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, living room — the bathroom is especially suitable due to natural humidity after showers.
- Temperature: 18 to 24 °C, without sudden changes.
- Humidity: high — ideally 60 to 80%.
The blue-green color intensifies with optimal brightness — if the fronds gradually turn green, move the plant to a brighter spot without exposing it to direct sunlight.
Watering & care
Phlebodium Blue Star is an epiphytic fern — in its natural habitat, it absorbs water from rain and ambient humidity rather than from constantly wet soil. When grown in a pot, the challenge is to keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become soggy. To never overwater again, check out our guide on watering indoor plants.
- Frequency: 2 to 3 times per week in spring-summer, less often in autumn-winter.
- Water: non-calcareous at room temperature — calcareous water browns the frond tips and dulls their bluish color.
- Misting: daily or every other day to maintain high ambient humidity.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and a very well-draining substrate (fern or orchid mix).
- Fertilizer: a liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half, once a month from April to September.
A tray filled with moist clay pebbles under the pot creates a constant humid microclimate around the foliage — this is the most effective method to reproduce the tropical atmosphere Phlebodium needs without risking root rot.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The blue-green color of Phlebodium Blue Star is unique among ferns — it naturally contrasts with all dark green foliage and creates very graphic combinations in hanging plant arrangements.
- For a collection of ferns with very contrasting textures, pair Phlebodium Blue Star with a Nephrolepis Green Lady and an Asplenium Crispy Wave — the velvety blue-green fronds of Phlebodium contrast with the bright wavy green of Asplenium and the airy fronds of Nephrolepis for a very sophisticated trio of textures.
- Suspended in a bright bathroom, Phlebodium Blue Star in the bathroom plant selection fully reveals its bluish color — the ambient humidity after showers exactly reproduces the conditions of its natural habitat.
- For a tropical color contrast, pair it with a Blechnum Silver Lady — the powdery blue-green of Phlebodium contrasts with the glossy silvery green of Blechnum for a very graphic and bright fern composition.
- To highlight its bluish hue, choose a matte white or light gray ceramic decorative pot — the cool, neutral tones of the ceramic complement the bluish freshness of the fronds and unify the composition in a calming, contemporary style.
Verdeia Tips
- Mist daily rather than watering more: Phlebodium Blue Star is an epiphytic fern that absorbs moisture through its fronds as much as through its roots — daily misting of the foliage maintains the intense bluish color and prevents browning of the tips.
- Carefully remove browned fronds at the base: a browned frond never turns green again — cutting it cleanly at the base prevents it from draining the plant’s energy and encourages the growth of new, denser bluish fronds.
- Repot every 2 years in spring with a light, airy substrate: use a fern or orchid mix that ensures optimal drainage without compacting — our guide on repotting walks you through the steps.
