Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Pachira Aquatica suitable for a home with pets? Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs — one of the few large tropical plants completely safe for pets.
How often should you water a Pachira Aquatica in summer? About once a week in summer, letting the surface of the soil dry out between waterings — its fleshy roots store water, making it very tolerant of occasional forgetfulness.

🌿 Characteristic braided trunk • ☀️ Indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🐾 Non-toxic • 🏙️ 3 sizes available
Pachira Aquatica, also called Money Tree or Guyana Chestnut, is an elegant tropical plant known for its characteristic braided trunk and lush, shiny green palmate foliage. A symbol of prosperity in many Asian cultures, it is one of the most sought-after plants in our lucky plants selection.
Native to the humid tropical regions of Central and South America, Pachira aquatica naturally grows along riverbanks and in swampy areas, where it develops its fleshy roots that store water. Indoors, this storage capacity makes it a plant tolerant of occasional missed watering — a reliable choice among easy-care plants. Non-toxic to pets and children.
Exposure & Location
Pachira Aquatica easily adapts to most bright interiors — soft, consistent indirect light is enough to maintain its dense foliage and balanced shape.
- Exposure: indirect light or bright partial shade — avoid direct sunlight which burns the palmate leaves.
- Ideal: living room, office, entryway, or any bright room without direct sun.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C — can spend summer outdoors in the shade and sheltered from wind.
- Substrate: light and well-drained — universal potting soil mixed with perlite.
Turn the pot a quarter turn every 15 days to balance growth — Pachira naturally orients its foliage toward the light.
Watering & Care
Pachira stores water in its fleshy roots — it tolerates occasional missed watering well and strongly prefers a slightly dry substrate over a soggy one. When in doubt, always wait one more day before watering.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate surface dry out between waterings.
- Drainage: essential — avoid any standing water in the decorative pot.
- Humidity: lightly mist regularly to maintain good leaf humidity.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer.
- Care: wipe the palmate leaves with a damp cloth to keep their shiny appearance.
In winter, space out watering — its fleshy roots store enough water to last several weeks without damage.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
With its braided trunk and generous palmate foliage, Pachira Aquatica is an architectural plant that draws the eye — it fits well in both contemporary decor and more natural settings.
- In large size, create a harmonious tropical trio by pairing Pachira with a Monstera Deliciosa with cut leaves and an Areca Palm with light fronds — three very different silhouettes for a dense and balanced tropical composition.
- In H90 cm | Pot Ø21 size, place it in a living room corner in the Elho Brussels White decorative pot Ø22 cm — the clean white highlights the braided trunk and the shiny green palmate foliage.
- Pair it with a Zamioculcas with glossy arched stems for a duo of symbolic and easy plants — the lucky Pachira and the Zamio, the plant of eternity, two very distinct silhouettes with similar care needs.
- In small H35 cm | Pot Ø12 size, place it on a desk or shelf in the white relief ceramic decorative pot Ø13.5 cm — the matte white elegantly highlights the miniature braided trunk.
Verdeia Tips
- Water sparingly: Pachira’s fleshy roots store water — a soggy substrate causes root rot much more often than underwatering; when in doubt, wait another week.
- Keep away from drafts: Pachira is sensitive to sudden temperature changes — a poorly insulated window in winter or an air conditioning vent in summer can cause yellowing and leaf drop.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring: into a slightly larger pot with a light, well-draining substrate — properly done, repotting restarts growth and strengthens the braided trunk’s vigor.
