Frequently Asked Questions
Can Aglaomorpha be grown hanging? Yes, it is actually an ideal way to grow this epiphytic fern — its rhizomes can spread freely outside the pot and its fronds naturally hang down. Use a hanging basket with very well-draining substrate and mist more often because hanging arrangements dry out faster.
Why are the tips of my Aglaomorpha’s fronds turning brown? It’s almost always due to low ambient humidity — increase misting frequency or move the plant to a more humid room like the bathroom. Watering with very hard water can also cause this symptom.

🌿 Bright green divided fronds • 🎨 Spectacular creeping golden rhizomes • ☀️ Partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 🐾 Non-toxic
Aglaomorpha coronans, also known as the Epiphytic fern, is a spectacular tropical fern native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, where it naturally grows on tree trunks in shaded understories. Its bright green deeply divided fronds create a lush, sculptural effect — but it is especially its creeping rhizomes covered with golden scales that make it unique: a tactile and visual dimension that few houseplants offer.
Air-purifying, non-toxic, available in two sizes: H45 cm | Pot Ø17 cm and H60 cm | Pot Ø23 cm. Discover it in our indoor fern collection and in our bathroom plant selection.
Exposure & Location
Aglaomorpha coronans prefers partial shade with soft indirect light — it tolerates low light, but its fronds grow best with a few hours of bright indirect light per day. Our light and humidity guide explains how to find the right balance.
- Exposure: partial shade, soft indirect light — tolerates low light, avoid direct sunlight.
- Ideal: bathroom, living room, office, or bright room without direct sun.
- Temperature: 18 to 25 °C, no sudden changes or drafts.
- Substrate: light, very airy, and well-draining — fern or orchid potting mix with bark and perlite.
As an epiphytic plant, Aglaomorpha appreciates a very airy substrate that mimics its natural habitat on tree trunks — avoid compact soils that retain too much water.
Watering & Care
Aglaomorpha likes a slightly moist substrate without ever being soggy. The finger test is especially useful here: wait until the top few centimeters of substrate are dry before watering again.
- Watering: moderate — let the substrate surface dry slightly between waterings.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring-summer, reduced in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes and a very draining substrate.
- Humidity: prefers 60 to 80% humidity — mist regularly or place near a humidifier.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring-summer with a liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half.
The creeping rhizomes are normal and part of this fern’s charm — never bury them, leave them visible on the substrate surface.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
Its divided fronds and golden rhizomes make it an accent plant that fascinates as much by its texture as by its silhouette — a fern you touch as much as you look at.
- In combination: pair it with an Asplenium nidus to contrast smooth and divided fronds, or with a Microsorum diversifolium — two epiphytic ferns with complementary textures that share the same needs. Find all our air-purifying plants to create a clean air corner.
- Ideal pot: a white ceramic decorative pot with relief highlights the bright green of the fronds without competing with the texture of the golden rhizomes.
- Ambiance: perfect as a statement plant in a living room or bright bathroom, or hanging to let the fronds cascade naturally.
The creeping golden rhizomes spilling over the pot are part of the show — a unique detail that sets this fern apart from all others.
Verdeia Tips
- Never touch the rhizomes — these golden creeping stems are the plant’s water storage organs. Do not bury or cut them. If they grow out of the pot, let them hang freely — this is their natural epiphytic behavior.
- Always high humidity — below 50% humidity, frond edges start to brown. Mist the foliage several times a week or place the pot on a saucer of moist clay pebbles. The bathroom remains the ideal location.
- Epiphytic substrate, not universal — use a mix of potting soil + orchid bark + perlite to replicate tree trunk conditions. A substrate that is too compact retains too much water and causes rhizome rot.
- Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring — in a slightly wider rather than deeper pot, to allow the rhizomes to spread. See our watering guide to adjust watering after repotting.
