The entrance and hallway are often the big forgotten areas when it comes to plant decoration. Little natural light, drafts, a narrow space: the conditions seem hostile. Yet, several species thrive perfectly there and transform these passage areas into true green welcomes.
Why add plants to your entrance?
The entrance is the first impression you give of your interior. A well-chosen plant immediately brings life, color, and a feeling of freshness. In a hallway, it breaks the linearity and creates visual points of interest. Beyond aesthetics, some species help filter the air — a real plus in a space often close to the front door. Discover our article plants that purify the air to learn more.
The champions of dark spaces
Zamioculcas (ZZ plant) is probably the best choice for a windowless hallway: it tolerates very low light, only needs watering every 2 to 3 weeks, and keeps shiny foliage in all conditions. The Aspidistra, nicknamed the "mother-in-law plant" in Japan, is even more resilient — it survived in the dark hallways of Victorian houses. The Aglaonema adds a touch of color with its leaves variegated in green, white, or pink, even in low light. Find these species in our Aglaonema and shade and partial shade plants collections.
Tall plants for a striking entrance
If your entrance has a bit of ceiling height, a large plant creates a spectacular effect. The Dracaena with its slender form, the tall versions of Sansevieria (Laurentii, Zeylanica), or the Kentia bring vertical volume without taking up much floor space — ideal when space is limited. Browse our selection of large XXL plants and our guide XXL plants: which to choose and how to integrate them.
Compact plants for a narrow hallway
An 80 cm wide hallway doesn’t leave much floor space. The solution: compact plants placed on a console or shelf. Peperomia, Pilea, and small Calathea work wonderfully in these setups. You can also hang a Pothos or Scindapsus whose vines will cascade down the wall. Explore our collections of small indoor plants, small spaces, and hanging and trailing plants.
Managing lack of light
An interior hallway without windows receives only artificial light or light filtering from adjacent rooms. In these conditions, favor species with solid dark green foliage: they capture light better than variegated varieties. Our article light and humidity: finding the right balance helps you assess the brightness of each space. You can also rotate your plants: one week in the hallway, one week in a brighter room.
Care suited to passage areas
In an entrance, you want plants that don’t require daily attention and don’t dirty the floor with dead leaves. The species recommended here are all known for their robustness and low water needs. For basic advice, check out our complete watering guide and our selection of hardy plants.
