Frequently Asked Questions
How can I make a String of Hearts grow faster? Bright indirect light and warmth are the two key growth factors. Place it near a bright window and keep the temperature between 18 and 25°C. Pinch the tips of the stems to encourage branching — each pinched stem produces two new shoots.
Is the String of Hearts safe for pets? Yes, Ceropegia woodii is completely non-toxic to cats and dogs — a welcome advantage for hanging plants within reach in a pet-friendly apartment.

💚 Small silver, marbled heart-shaped leaves • 🌿 Trailing stems that can exceed 1 m • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Very little watering • 🌸 Purple tubular flowers • 🐾 Non-toxic
Ceropegia woodii, also known as String of Hearts, is a trailing succulent native to the semi-arid regions of South Africa. Its small, fleshy, heart-shaped leaves, gray-green and adorned with silver patterns, grow along thin, delicate stems that trail down in a cascade - a highly sought-after romantic and poetic effect. In summer, small purple tubular flowers may appear. H50 cm | Pot Ø14 cm.
Non-toxic and very easy to care for. A reliable choice among trailing plants.
Which Ceropegia variety should you choose?
The Ceropegia genus offers several distinct leaf shapes and growth habits:
- Ceropegia woodii (this plant) - small silver heart-shaped leaves, thin trailing stems, and an iconic romantic look. The best-known and most popular variety.
- Ceropegia linearis 'Iris' - thin, elongated leaves and a more linear, graphic trailing habit. The most slender variety.
- Ceropegia linearis 'Remy' - thin tubular leaves and a compact growth habit. The most original in texture.
The String of Hearts is the most iconic variety of the genus - its heart-shaped leaves are instantly recognizable and highly valued in interior decor.
Light & placement
- Ideal exposure: bright indirect light - the more intense the light, the more pronounced the silver patterns.
- Tolerates: gentle morning sun.
- Avoid: direct afternoon sun, which can burn the fleshy leaves.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C; tolerates fluctuations.
- Substrate: very well-draining - cactus and succulent soil with perlite.
Hanging near a bright window, its stems grow quickly and can exceed 1 metre in length. Its ideal placement depends on the balance between light and humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: very little - allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings.
- Frequency: once every 2 weeks in spring and summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: pot with drainage holes and very well-draining substrate - essential.
- Fertilizer: diluted cactus fertilizer once every 4-6 weeks in spring and summer.
- Pruning: pinch the tips to encourage branching and a bushy growth habit.
It is better to underwater than overwater - root rot is its only real threat. The finger test helps prevent overwatering.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its slender stems covered with small silver hearts create a unique airy and romantic effect - a plant best appreciated up close.
- Hanging: in a macramé or white ceramic hanging pot, its stems trail down in a cascade for a wonderfully romantic effect.
- In combination: pair it with a Rhipsalis or a Dischidia for a trio of trailing plants with very different textures - similar needs and complementary aesthetics.
- Style: romantic, bohemian, urban jungle - its little hearts complement any interior featuring natural materials.
Easy to propagate - cut a stem and plant it directly in the substrate. You will have a new plant within a few weeks.
Verdeia tips
- Never water when the substrate is still damp - this is the golden rule for the String of Hearts. Wait until the substrate is completely dry - even in summer. Root rot develops quickly and is difficult to treat.
- Bright light for silver patterns - in insufficient light, new leaves emerge greener and less silver. Move the plant closer to a source of intense indirect light.
- 🐾 Non-toxic - the String of Hearts is completely safe for cats and dogs. In a pet-friendly home, more ideas can be found among these compatible plants and pets.
