Frequently Asked Questions
Can Sarracenia × Farnhamii stay outdoors all year round? It tolerates temperatures down to about -10 °C and needs a cool winter rest between 5 and 10 °C — keep it outside protected from frost or in a cool, bright space from November to February.
Why are the pitchers of my Sarracenia × Farnhamii losing their white marbling? A lack of direct light is the main cause — move it to a sunnier spot and the new pitchers will regain their characteristic white and purple marbling.

🐾 Non-toxic • 🪴 Slender pitchers marbled in green, purple, and white • 🌞 Sun / Partial shade • 💧 Always-moist substrate • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
The Sarracenia × Farnhamii, also known as the Pitcher carnivorous plant, is a spectacular hybrid resulting from a cross between Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia purpurea — its tall, slender pitchers, marbled in green, purple, and sometimes white depending on sun exposure, give it rare elegance among carnivorous plants. At 40 cm, it is one of the most imposing Sarracenias in the catalogue. Combine it with other carnivorous plants to create a complete carnivorous garden.
Its distinctive feature compared with other Sarracenias is the white marbling inherited from leucophylla, which gives it a unique appearance — the brighter the light, the more intense the purple and white tones. Each species of carnivorous plant has its own care requirements.
Light & placement
Sarracenia × Farnhamii thrives in a bright, sunny environment — the more direct light it receives, the more its pitchers develop their characteristic purple and white tones.
- Light: direct sun to bright partial shade.
- Ideal for: a sunny balcony or terrace, a south- or west-facing windowsill, or a conservatory.
- Temperature: 5 to 25 °C; tolerates cool conditions during winter dormancy.
- Substrate: sphagnum peat and perlite, always moist and without fertilizer.
Watering & care
- Water required: exclusively rainwater or demineralized water — keep 1 to 2 cm of water in the saucer at all times; the substrate must never dry out. Sarracenia × Catesbaei and Sarracenia venosa follow the same care requirements.
- Winter (dormancy): slightly reduce the water level and keep the substrate just moist in a cool place (5 to 10 °C).
- Fertilizer: none — the plant feeds on insects captured in its pitchers.
- Pruning: remove dry pitchers to encourage new, colorful growth.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its upright silhouette and marbled pitchers make it a striking feature for a bright corner — placed high on a console or balcony, the elegant verticality of its pitchers immediately draws the eye. A reliable choice for a plant corner.
- In a Sarracenia collection: pair it with Sarracenia psittacina, with its reclining parrot-like pitchers, and Sarracenia venosa, with its veined pitchers — three Sarracenias with radically different pitcher shapes, creating a fascinating collection within the same genus.
- In a complete carnivorous display: add a Dionaea muscipula — slender pitchers plus toothed traps, two capture mechanisms, and a spectacular, educational arrangement.
- Decorative pot: beige stoneware, matte ceramic, or a light stone decorative pot creates an effective contrast with the pitchers' purple and white tones.
Verdeia tips
- Non-limescale water is absolutely essential: even a single watering with tap water may be enough to weaken the plant — use only rainwater or demineralized water and always keep 1 to 2 cm of water in the saucer.
- Maximize light to intensify the colors: Farnhamii's characteristic white and purple marbling intensifies directly under sunlight — a full-sun position in summer will produce the most colorful pitchers.
- Respect winter dormancy: place it in a cool (5 to 10 °C), bright location between November and February — this dormancy is essential for vigorous spring growth with new, colorful pitchers.
