The Buddleja davidii 'Royal Red', also known as Butterfly Bush or Summer Lilac, unfurls long conical panicles of deep crimson-red flowers with purple highlights throughout summer, lightly scented with a honeyed fragrance. Native to China and naturalized across much of Europe, this fast-growing deciduous shrub is one of the most attractive balcony plants for biodiversity in the catalogue.
What sets it apart from other flowering shrubs is its exceptional nectar production, attracting a multitude of butterflies, bees and bumblebees throughout the flowering period, from midsummer to the first frosts. Its very fast growth (up to 1.5 m per year) and generous flowering make it an ideal companion for quickly transforming a balcony or terrace into a vibrant haven.
Light & placement
The Buddleja 'Royal Red' requires full sun for abundant flowering and an intense crimson-red colour. It tolerates bright partial shade, but flowering will be sparser. It withstands heat, wind and poor soils with remarkable ease.
- Light: full sun essential — at least 6 hours of direct sun per day for generous flowering.
- Placement: balcony, terrace, planter, or planted in the ground — suitable for hot, dry and windy locations.

Watering & care
The Buddleja 'Royal Red' is remarkably drought-resistant once established. In a pot, however, the substrate dries out quickly in summer: keep watering regular during the flowering period. To adjust your watering, check the moisture of the substrate with your finger before each watering.
- Watering: regular in summer to support flowering, twice a week in a pot during hot weather, every 10 days in the shoulder seasons, and almost none in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes, add clay pebbles at the bottom, and always empty the saucer after watering.
- Fertiliser: undemanding — liquid fertiliser for flowering plants every 3 to 4 weeks from April to September is more than enough.
- Pruning: prune very hard at the end of winter (February–March), cutting all branches back to 20–30 cm above the ground. Flowering occurs on new wood, so this severe pruning is essential.
- Deadheading: cut off faded panicles as they appear to extend flowering and prevent self-seeding (Buddleja is classified as invasive in some regions).
- Repotting: every 2 years in spring, into a slightly larger pot — in a pot, its rapid growth soon requires more space.
Leaf drop in autumn is perfectly normal — Buddleja davidii is a deciduous shrub that grows fresh foliage again the following spring, often as early as March.
