🏆 Award of Garden Merit variety (RHS) • 🎨 Light blue, then green, mauve and purple • 📅 Flowering from July to October • ⛅ Partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -23 °C • 💐 Excellent cut flower
Hydrangea macrophylla Magical® Revolution Blue ('Hokomarevo') is the blue version of one of the best-known varieties in the Magical® series, recognized with the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. Horticultural selection from Europe (the Netherlands), it is one of the easiest blue hydrangeas to grow among the easy-care plants in the catalogue.
Its dense pom-pom flowers open light blue, then take on shades of green, mauve and purple through the summer, before developing a papery texture in autumn. Delivered 55 cm tall in a 23 cm pot with 6 to 10 flower heads, it is light blue in July, takes on shades of green and mauve in August, then turns purple in September-October.
Which hydrangea should you choose?
The Hydrangea varieties in the catalogue do not have the same flowering or the same uses:
- Magical® Revolution (this plant) — flowers that change color from July to October, an award-winning variety recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society. The most spectacular in late summer.
- Forever & Ever® — repeat-flowering: it blooms again on the current year's shoots, even after a harsh winter or incorrect pruning. The safest choice for flowering every year.
- Magical® Jewel — starts lime green and ends deep blue. The most contrasting in the series.
- Magical® Greenfire — pink flamed with green. The most tolerant of full sun.
- Magical® Noblesse — almond green, then pure white, then bright green. The best suited to shade.
- Magical® Ruby Tuesday — from green to intense red. The deepest red in the series.
- 'Pink Annabelle' — Hydrangea arborescens with large flower balls on sturdy stems, to be cut back hard every winter. The hardiest.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — the only climber, for covering a wall in the shade.
Magical® Revolution is also available in pink: Revolution Pink.
Exposure & location
Revolution tolerates sun and rain well, but its light blue at the start of flowering lasts longer in partial shade, sheltered from the afternoon sun.
- Exposure: partial shade, morning sun tolerated.
- Location: balcony, east- or north-facing terrace, entrance, sheltered from strong winds.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -23 °C - a winter protection fleece protects the buds during severe cold.
- Soil type: moist, rich and acidic - it is the acidity that preserves the blue color.
Mauve and purple shades appear earlier on the most exposed flowers: the same plant can display several colors at once.
Watering & care
Like all hydrangeas, it uses a lot of water in summer: checking the substrate with your finger every two days prevents it from drying out, and yellow leaves between the veins indicate water that is too hard.
- Watering: generously and regularly - every two to three days in summer, much less in winter.
- Water: rainwater or non-limescale water - hard water turns the blue pink.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for blue hydrangeas, from March to July.
- Pruning: remove faded flowers in March, just above the first pair of buds.
- Repotting: into a wider pot the following spring, using ericaceous soil.
Keep the flowers until autumn: their papery texture at the end of the season is part of the variety's charm.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its cool palette, from blue to purple, pairs with white flowers and delicate foliage: choosing plants with the same exposure guarantees a display that lasts all summer.
- For a blue and white duo, pair it with Hydrangea 'Strong Annabelle' - the same exposure, the same water needs, and the white brings out every shade of blue.
- For a woodland composition, plant a Korean Fern at its base - its dark green extends the green tones taken on by the flowers.
- For a graphic backdrop, place a Fargesia 'Moontears' behind it — a non-running bamboo whose fine, light foliage highlights the mass of pom-poms.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — the dark gray intensifies the blue and complements the purple autumn tones.
Cut at the end of summer, the mauve and purple flower heads dry very well in a vase without water and remain decorative all winter.
Verdeia tips
- Repot it in ericaceous soil: the hydrangea's blue color comes from aluminum in the soil, which it only absorbs in an acidic environment. A suitable substrate and fertilizer for blue hydrangeas preserve the original color.
- Let the flowers complete their cycle: the transition from blue to purple takes several weeks. Removing the flowers too early means losing what distinguishes Revolution.
- Protect it in severe cold: in a pot, a winter protection fleece during prolonged frosts protects the buds that will flower the following summer.
