🌸 Large blue, pink, white, and violet flower spikes • 👃 Intense fragrance • 🌱 Compact, 20 to 25 cm • 🌤️ Flowers in March-April • 🪴 Ideal for pots and planters • 🏠 Can be forced indoors • ❄️ Hardy • 📏 Large size 14/15 bulbs
The garden hyacinth is the most fragrant spring bulb: in March and April, each bulb sends up a dense 20 to 25 cm spike covered with star-shaped bells, whose fragrance carries several meters. This mix brings together blue, pink, white, and violet. The species, Hyacinthus orientalis, is native to the eastern Mediterranean (Turkey, Lebanon, Syria), and its varieties have been cultivated in the Netherlands since the 18th century.
Compact and sturdy, it can be planted in a pot, planter, or border, and is easy to force indoors to bring flowers to your home in the middle of winter. Among our flower bulbs, this is the one to choose for fragrance, and its large size 14/15 bulbs produce full flower spikes from the very first bloom.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Hyacinths make the biggest impact when planted in groups: allow for approximately 25 bulbs per square meter, or 4 to 5 bulbs in a pot 20 cm in diameter.
- 10 bulbs: two pots on a balcony, or a few bulbs to force indoors.
- 20 bulbs: approximately 0.75 m², or four pots and planters.
- 40 bulbs: approximately 1.5 m², for a fragrant border along a path or terrace.
- 80 bulbs: approximately 3 m², for a colorful, fragrant spring flower bed.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the pack of 80 costs less than half as much per bulb as the pack of 10.
Planting & location
Plant the bulbs from October to December, once the soil has cooled, for flowering in March and April.
- Exposure: sun or partial shade; in sun, the flower spikes are more compact and the fragrance stronger.
- Depth: 12 to 15 cm, tip facing up.
- Spacing: 15 cm between bulbs in the ground, 3 to 5 cm in a pot.
- Soil type: light and well-drained; add sand to heavy soil, as the bulb rots in waterlogged soil.
- Hardiness: down to -20 °C in the ground; in pots, move the container against a wall during severe cold.
Wear gloves when planting: hyacinth bulb skins can cause itching on sensitive hands.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, check the moisture with the finger test before each watering.
- Watering: light — when planting, then in pots when the potting soil is dry on the surface, especially as the flower spikes emerge.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, apply bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut the flower spike at the base as soon as it fades, leaving the leaves in place.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow for six weeks; it replenishes the bulb for the following year.
In the years that follow, the flower spikes are lighter and more widely spaced: this is normal; the hyacinth takes on a more natural look while remaining just as fragrant.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its fragrance makes it the queen of pots near a door or window, as shown by our ideas for fragrant plants for balconies and indoors.
- For a blue carpet beneath the flower spikes, plant Armenian grape hyacinths between the hyacinths — their small blue clusters bloom at the same time, like a miniature version.
- For a fragrant flower bed in April, pair them with Narcissus 'Thalia' — its white flowers with a gentle fragrance complement the hyacinths.
- For a pot that blooms from February, add large-flowered crocuses above them — they kick off the season, then the hyacinths take over.
- For a balcony display, plant 4 to 5 bulbs in the white Elho Greenville Round pot in the Ø20 cm size — white enhances all the colors in the mix, and the drainage hole prevents standing water.
Place pots of hyacinths near the entrance or under an open window: their fragrance welcomes everyone who passes by.
Verdeia tips
- Force a few for winter: plant 3 to 5 bulbs close together in a pot in October, keep it cool and dark for ten to twelve weeks (cellar, garage), then move it to a bright room: it will bloom in three weeks.
- Give them as a flowering potted gift: a pot of hyacinths in bud is a very fragrant late-winter gift, as shown by our ideas for gift plants.
- Replant forced bulbs in the garden: after flowering indoors, let the foliage turn yellow, then plant the bulbs outside in autumn. They will bloom again in the garden, with lighter flower spikes.
