Frequently Asked Questions
When should potted grasses be pruned? Evergreen grasses should not be cut back severely: simply comb through them with your fingers at the beginning of spring to remove the dry leaves.
Can potted grasses withstand winter? Fescue, carex, and stipa can withstand temperatures down to -15 °C in pots and retain their decorative foliage throughout the winter.

💙 Blue fescue • 💛 Yellow ribbon carex • 💚 Soft green feathery stipa • ☀️ Sun or light partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -15 °C • 🌿 Minimal care
This trio of grasses brings together three complementary plants, each in its own 17 cm pot: a blue ball of Festuca glauca 'Intense Blue', Carex oshimensis 'Evergold' with yellow and green ribbon-like leaves, and Stipa tenuissima 'Pony Tails' with fine foliage that ripples in the slightest breeze. Species originating from Europe, Japan and America, they are among the plants for sunny balconies that remain decorative all year round.
Three textures, three colors and three different growth habits: placed side by side in a planter, they form a ready-to-plant composition that comes alive whenever the wind blows. They require very little water and almost no pruning.
Which grass should you choose?
The grasses and grass-like foliage plants in the catalog:
- Trio of grasses (this plant) — blue fescue, yellow carex and green stipa, 3 Ø17 cm pots. The ready-to-plant composition.
- Blue fescue 'Azura Blue' — a silvery-blue ball, in Ø14 or Ø19 cm. The most compact, for full sun.
- Carex 'Ice Dance' — green leaves edged in cream, in Ø14 cm. The best suited to partial shade.
- Miscanthus 'Strictus' — tall upright leaves striped with yellow, in Ø19 or Ø23 cm. The tallest, for a light screen.
The trio costs less than €15 per plant: the most economical way to fill a large planter.
Exposure & placement
They love light and air: a sunny, even windy balcony suits them perfectly. Carex also tolerates partial shade, while fescue keeps its blue color in full sun.
- Exposure: full sun or light partial shade — at least 4 hours of sun per day.
- Placement: balcony planter, patio container, border, base of a standard shrub.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -15 °C — they stay outdoors all year round.
- Soil type: well-draining potting soil, even poor soil — excess standing water is their only real enemy.
Place the stipa on the side most exposed to the wind: it is what gives the composition movement.
Watering & care
Once established, they need very little water: checking the substrate's moisture with your finger prevents overwatering, and going away for a few days in summer is no problem for them.
- Watering: moderate — when the substrate is dry a few centimeters down, more often in the first year; greatly reduced in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary most of the time — a light application in spring is sufficient.
- Pruning: in spring, comb through the clumps by hand to remove dry leaves; do not cut them back to the ground.
- Repotting: every two or three years, dividing clumps that have become too wide.
Running your fingers through each clump in March is enough to rejuvenate them for the entire season.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Their fine foliage lightens more substantial plants and pairs well with all those that share the same balcony exposure, from sun to light partial shade.
- For a Mediterranean balcony, pair them with 'Hidcote Blue' lavender — they have the same sun and water requirements, and its purple flower spikes echo the fescue's blue.
- For a touch of summer flowers, add an Agapanthus 'Poppin Purple' — its purple umbels rise above the stipa's foliage.
- To dress the base of a standard shrub, plant them beneath a standard 'Emerald 'n' Gold' spindle tree — the golden sedge extends the yellow of its foliage.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — its dark tone makes the blue, yellow, and soft green stand out.
Arranged in a line from shortest to tallest, with fescue at the front, sedge in the middle and stipa at the back, they add depth even to a narrow planter.
Verdeia tips
- Ensure good drainage at the bottom of the pot: these grasses tolerate drought but not waterlogged roots. A layer of clay pebbles at the bottom and perlite-enriched potting soil prevent water from stagnating around the roots.
- Leave them outdoors in winter: they are among the cold-hardy plants that retain their foliage under frost. In severe frost, simply wrap the pot in winter protection fleece.
- Divide them after a few years: when the center of a clump becomes sparse, cut the root ball in half in spring and replant each half. You get two plants instead of one.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Shipping is done within 48 business hours, with tracked delivery within 2 to 5 business days. Delivery costs €5.60 — free for orders over €50. You will receive a tracking link as soon as the package is shipped.
What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What to do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
