🌿 Shiny fleshy green leaves • 🌑 Tolerates low light • 💧 Minimal watering • 📏 H15 cm | Pot Ø11 cm • 🌬️ Air-purifying • 🐾 Non-toxic
The Peperomia Obtipan is a compact tropical plant native to South American forests. Its thick, glossy bright green leaves allow it to store water — which is why it only needs very infrequent watering and tolerates low-light spaces perfectly. Size D11 x H15 cm, ideal for a desk, shelf, or bedside table.
One of the easiest plants in our catalog — non-toxic, air-purifying, very forgiving of neglect.
Which Peperomia variety to choose?
The Peperomia genus is one of the most diverse — shapes, colors, and textures vary greatly from one variety to another. Here are the most distinctive profiles:
- Peperomia Obtipan (this plant) — shiny fleshy green leaves, compact shape H15 cm | Pot Ø11 cm. The most classic and understated.
- Peperomia Hope — soft green trailing foliage, ideal for hanging. The only trailing variety.
- Peperomia Caperata 'Rosso' — dark green puckered leaves with red undersides. The most textured and bicolor.
- Peperomia Napoli Nights — dark, almost black foliage with purple highlights. The most dramatic.
- Peperomia Red 'Red Canyon' — spectacular burgundy red foliage. The most colorful.
Other varieties are available in our full collection — Raindrop, Sarcophylla, Burning Bush, Rana Verde, and more.
Exposure & location
The Peperomia Obtipan is one of the most accommodating houseplants — it tolerates conditions where many other decorative plants would fail.
- Ideal exposure: moderate to low indirect light — indoor desk, shelf, dimly lit room.
- Tolerates: partial shade, artificial light only, dry air.
- Avoid: direct sunlight that burns the fleshy leaves.
- Temperature: 18–24 °C, without sudden changes.
- Soil: light, airy, and well-drained — universal potting mix with perlite.
Its fleshy leaves store water like a succulent — this allows it to survive in low light and with infrequent watering where other plants would wither.
Watering & care
- Watering: minimal — let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
- Frequency: about once every 2 weeks in spring and summer, once a month in winter.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential — the fleshy leaves store water, and roots rot quickly in soggy soil.
- Humidity: perfectly tolerates dry air — no need for misting.
- Fertilizer: very diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, once every 2 months in spring and summer.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to preserve their shine.
The Peperomia is the perfect plant for those who forget to water — its fleshy leaves act as a natural water reserve. Overwatering is its only real risk. Check out our complete watering guide to never overwater again.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The compact size and understated foliage of the Peperomia Obtipan make it an ideal background plant — it structures an arrangement without dominating it.
- On a shelf arrangement: pair it with a Napoli Nights or a Rosso to play with color and texture contrasts in a compact format.
- On a desk: its D11 x H15 cm size and minimal requirements make it the perfect office plant — sufficient artificial light, very infrequent watering.
- Ideal pot: matte white, gray, or terracotta ceramic — neutral tones highlight the glossy green without competing with it.
Group several compact Peperomia varieties to create a cohesive plant collection — same care needs, very varied foliage.
Verdeia advice
- Excess water is its only real risk — its fleshy leaves store water like a succulent. Constantly moist soil causes root rot within weeks. Wait until the soil is dry before watering.
- Yellowing and dropping leaves: overwatering — the most common sign of watering too often. Reduce frequency immediately and let the soil dry out completely.
- Wilting leaves: lack of water — rare with Peperomia but possible after a long neglect. Moderate watering will help the plant recover quickly.
- Repot rarely — Peperomia prefers to be snug in its pot. Repot only every 2 to 3 years in spring, into a slightly larger pot.
- 🐾 Non-toxic — completely safe for dogs and cats. Check out our plants and pets guide for more pet-friendly ideas.
