🌟 Star-shaped white flowers with an enchanting fragrance • 🌿 Shiny dark green evergreen foliage • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to −10 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice', also known as white star jasmine, is a hardy evergreen climber native to Southeast Asia, with shiny dark green leaves and delightfully fragrant star-shaped white flowers. It blooms from June to August — the sweet, captivating scent is especially strong in the evening and during warm weather.
Evergreen, hardy down to −10 °C, and low-maintenance, it decoratively covers trellises, pergolas, and balconies all year round.
Which variety of Star Jasmine to choose?
The Trachelospermum genus offers three colors — all evergreen, highly fragrant, and hardy down to −10 °C:
- Trachelospermum 'Star of Venice' (this plant) — pure white, very fragrant flowers, the most classic and widespread variety. The timeless white version.
- Trachelospermum 'Star of Ibiza' — delicate pale pink fragrant flowers. The romantic pink version.
- Trachelospermum 'Star of Toscana' — bright yellow fragrant flowers. The sunny Mediterranean version, unique in yellow.
Exposure & Location
The 'Star of Venice' star jasmine thrives in bright, warm spaces while tolerating partial shade. It blooms more in full sun, but its evergreen foliage remains decorative in the shade. Protect it from cold winds in winter, especially when potted.
- Exposure: full sun to partial shade — more sun = more flowers and fragrance.
- Support: trellis, railing, arch, or pergola.
- Soil: rich, well-drained, slightly cool in summer.
- Hardiness: down to −10 °C — protect the base in winter in very cold regions.
Place it near a relaxation corner or an open window — its sweet, captivating scent is especially strong in the evening during warm weather, when the flowers release their aromas to the fullest.
Watering & Care
Star jasmine is low-maintenance once well-rooted. Water regularly in summer when potted, less frequently in winter. Light pruning after flowering encourages branching and prepares for next year’s bloom. Semi-woody cuttings taken in summer root easily.
- Watering: regular in summer, very moderate in winter — avoid stagnant water.
- Pruning: light pruning after flowering at the end of summer to encourage branching.
- Mulching: at the base to retain moisture and protect roots in winter.
- Fertilizer: use flowering plant fertilizer in spring to support blooming.
If leaves yellow out of season, check drainage and exposure — waterlogged soil in winter or too much shade are the most common causes.
Decor Ideas & Plant Pairings
The shiny dark green evergreen foliage of 'Star of Venice' creates a dense, decorative green backdrop all year — its white summer flowers add a light, fragrant touch that transforms this backdrop into a complete floral composition.
- For a duo of fragrant white and purple climbers, Wisteria sinensis 'Caroline' starts the season in April-May on bare wood before star jasmine takes over from June to August — white and purple alternate on the same support for a scented facade from spring to summer.
- For a very elegant white and cream combination, the climbing rose Crazy in Love 'Vanilla' cream complements the white star jasmine — both bloom overlapping in June-July for a soft, fragrant two-tone composition on the same pergola.
- To extend the fragrant season, the evergreen white Honeysuckle 'Halliana' prolongs the scents until September where star jasmine rests after its big summer bloom.
- For a Mediterranean touch in a pot, the Mediterranean olive tree brings its sculptural trunk and silvery evergreen foliage to the base of the star jasmine — an iconic pairing for southern terraces, very coherent in style.
Verdeia Tips
- Choose the sunniest and most sheltered spot available: star jasmine blooms more and its fragrance is stronger in full sun — a warm location protected from north winds combines both conditions for maximum flowering.
- Prune lightly after flowering, never before: pruning at the end of summer stimulates side shoots that will bear next summer’s flowers — pruning too early in spring would remove already formed flower buds.
- Mulch the base in winter: even hardy down to −10 °C, its roots in pots are more vulnerable — a thick mulch layer of 5 to 8 cm protects the root ball during harsh winters and retains moisture during hot summers.
