☀️ Brightness guide

🌿 In brief — find your XXL plant quickly

Very bright: Strelitzia Nicolai, Ficus lyrata, Yucca · Bright indirect: Monstera, Alocasia, Philodendron · Partial shade: Dracaena, Schefflera · Beginner: Yucca, Dracaena marginata

A single XXL plant can transform an entire room — create a focal point, structure the space, bring an immediate plant presence. But not all suit every interior. This guide helps you choose according to your brightness, experience level, and style.

Why adopt an XXL plant?

Large plants offer much more than aesthetic impact. A single well-chosen XXL plant replaces several small plants while creating an incomparable visual effect. It structures the space, creates a focal point, and brings a plant presence that makes an interior feel alive.

🎯
Immediate focal point

An imposing plant catches the eye as soon as you enter a room and gives a clear visual direction to your decor.

🏗️
Structures the space

Used as a natural divider in an open space or empty corner, it defines zones without closing off the space.

💨
Air quality

Their large leaf surface amplifies the natural air purification and humidification effects.

💚
Sustainable investment

A well-maintained XXL plant lives for decades. It’s a decor investment that gains value over time.

Choose your XXL plant according to brightness

Available brightness is the first criterion — before style, before budget. A poorly placed plant will wither no matter how much care you give it.

Brightness Typical situation Suitable XXL plants
☀️ Very bright Less than 1 m from a large south/west window Strelitzia Nicolai, Yucca, Ficus lyrata, Areca
🌤 Indirect light 1–3 m from a window, no direct sunlight Monstera deliciosa, Philodendron pedatum, Alocasia macrorrhiza, Kentia
⛅ Partial shade More than 3 m from a window or north-facing Dracaena compacta, Dracaena marginata, Schefflera, Philodendron Congo Red

💡 How to assess your brightness?

Place your hand 30 cm above a white leaf at the desired spot: sharp shadow = bright light, blurred shadow = indirect light, no shadow = Partial shade. See our guide light and humidity: finding the right balance.

How to integrate an XXL plant into your decor

📐
Empty corners

The ideal spot for an XXL plant. A corner offers a neutral background that highlights the foliage and silhouette of the plant.

🛋️
Next to a sofa

Placing a large plant behind a sofa creates a natural, framing plant composition.

🚪
Space divider

In an open space, an XXL plant naturally separates the living area from the dining area without partitions.

🪟
Framing a window

Two plants on either side of a large window create a particularly elegant green frame effect.

Golden rules for integration

  • Leave 50 cm of space around for movement and maintenance (watering, leaf cleaning)
  • Choose the final location before buying — especially for the Ficus lyrata, which hates being moved
  • An XXL plant stands on its own — avoid overcrowding the space around it
  • Play with levels by pairing a few low plants at the base for a controlled jungle effect
  • Allow at least 2.5 m ceiling height for species with strong vertical growth

XXL plant care

Watering

XXL plants need more water, but overwatering remains the number one risk. Always use the finger test before watering. Generally, weekly watering in summer and biweekly in winter is enough — needs vary significantly by species.

Leaf cleaning

Cleaning large leaves of an XXL indoor plant

Large leaves collect dust that reduces photosynthesis and dulls their appearance. Wipe with a damp cloth (top and underside) every 2–4 weeks. For plants with many small leaves like Schefflera, a warm shower in winter is more effective.

Fertilizing

To maintain vigorous growth, fertilize every 2 weeks in spring and summer with a liquid fertilizer diluted by half. Stop completely in autumn and winter. Check our maintenance accessories selection to find the right fertilizer.

Repotting

An XXL plant usually needs repotting every 2–3 years, in spring, when roots come out of the pot. Move up to a pot only 3–5 cm larger in diameter — a pot that’s too big encourages root rot. See our complete repotting guide.

⚠️ Overwatering: the number one danger

Most XXL plant deaths are due to overwatering, not lack of water. A constantly soggy substrate causes root rot — often silently until it’s too late. Always check moisture before watering.

Choosing the right pot for an XXL plant

Pots and decorative pots for XXL plants — terracotta, concrete, rattan

The pot plays a major aesthetic role for a large plant. It must be proportionate, stable, and in harmony with your interior.

  • Recommended diameter: 30–50 cm depending on plant size
  • Weight and stability: essential for large plants — favor heavy materials (terracotta, concrete, thick ceramic)
  • Roller saucer: highly recommended to ease occasional moves (watering, cleaning)
  • Drainage: always a drainage hole — decorative pots without holes require extra care to avoid water buildup

Materials by style

Material Style Advantages
Terracotta / Ceramic Natural, Mediterranean, handcrafted Breathable, heavy and stable, durable
Concrete / Reconstituted stone Industrial, minimalist, contemporary Very stable, sturdy, modern
Rattan / Natural fibers Bohemian, natural, warm Lightweight, decorative — to be paired with an indoor plastic pot
Recycled plastic All styles depending on finish Lightweight, less fragile, durable — good option for balconies

FAQ — XXL Plants

Plan for at least 2.50 m ceiling height. Species like Strelitzia Nicolai or Ficus lyrata can reach 2 meters indoors — leave space above for their growth and prevent leaves from touching the ceiling.

For low-light spaces, choose Dracaena marginata, Schefflera, or Philodendron Congo Red. Avoid Strelitzia Nicolai, Ficus lyrata, and Yucca, which need bright light to thrive.

Not necessarily. The Yucca, Dracaena, and Schefflera are very forgiving if neglected. The main challenge with large plants is precise watering (risk of overwatering large volumes of soil) and regular cleaning of the big leaves.

XXL plants are heavy — a rolling saucer is highly recommended. Avoid frequent moves: they adapt to their environment, and sudden changes (light, temperature) often cause leaf drop. The Ficus lyrata is especially sensitive in this regard.

The Kentia Palm, Areca, and some Dracaena are good options. Avoid Strelitzia, Ficus, and Alocasia if you have cats or dogs. See our full selection of large non-toxic plants for pets.

Prices vary by species, size, and rarity. Expect generally between €80 and €300 for a beautiful XXL plant. It’s a decor investment, but a well-maintained plant can live for decades — far beyond the cost of furniture or artwork. Our XXL packs offer a particularly good quality-visual impact ratio.

A healthy plant has firm leaves, a uniform green color, without spots or excessive yellowing. New leaf growth is a good sign of vitality. Yellowing = often overwatering or nutrient deficiency. Browning edges = air too dry or water too hard. Check our diagnostic guide to identify the problem precisely.
