Frequently Asked Questions
Can Sarracenia × Farnhamii stay outdoors all year round? It tolerates temperatures down to about -10 °C and needs a cool winter rest between 5 and 10 °C — keep it outside protected from frost or in a cool, bright space from November to February.
Why are the pitchers of my Sarracenia × Farnhamii losing their white marbling? A lack of direct light is the main cause — move it to a sunnier spot and the new pitchers will regain their characteristic white and purple marbling.

🐾 Non-toxic • 🪴 Slender urns marbled green, purple, and white • 🌞 Sun / Partial shade • 💧 Substrate always moist • 📏 H40 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Sarracenia × Farnhamii, also called the Pitcher Carnivorous Plant, is a spectacular hybrid resulting from the cross between Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia purpurea — its tall, slender urns, marbled with green, purple, and sometimes white depending on sun exposure, give it a rare elegance among carnivorous plants. At 40 cm, it is one of the largest Sarracenias in the catalog. Discover our other carnivorous plants to create a complete carnivorous garden.
Its unique feature compared to other Sarracenias: the white marbling inherited from leucophylla gives it a distinctive look — the brighter the light, the more intense the purple and white shades become. Our complete guide to carnivorous plants explains the specific care requirements for each species.
Exposure & Location
Sarracenia × Farnhamii thrives in a bright, sunny environment — the more direct light it receives, the more its urns develop their characteristic purple and white hues.
- Exposure: direct sun to bright partial shade.
- Ideal for: sunny balcony or terrace, south- or west-facing windowsill, conservatory.
- Temperature: 5 to 25 °C, tolerates cool conditions during winter dormancy.
- Substrate: blond peat and perlite, always moist and without fertilizer.
Watering & Care
- Water required: exclusively rainwater or demineralized water — keep 1 to 2 cm of water in the saucer at all times; the substrate must never dry out. Also check out Sarracenia × Catesbaei and Sarracenia venosa, which share the same care approach.
- Winter (dormancy): slightly reduce water level, keep substrate just moist in a cool place (5 to 10 °C).
- Fertilizer: none — the plant feeds on insects trapped in its urns.
- Pruning: remove dry urns to encourage the growth of new colorful urns.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
Its upright silhouette and marbled urns make it a striking piece for a bright corner — placed high on a console or balcony, the elegant verticality of its urns immediately draws the eye. Our guide to creating a plant corner will give you ideas for styling it.
- In a Sarracenia collection: pair it with Sarracenia psittacina with its reclining parrot-shaped urns and Sarracenia venosa with its veined urns — three Sarracenias, three radically different urn shapes, a fascinating collection within the same genus.
- In a complete carnivorous tray: add a Dionaea muscipula — slender urns plus toothed traps, two capture mechanisms, a spectacular and educational composition.
- Decorative pot: beige stoneware, matte ceramic, or a light stone decorative pot contrasts effectively with the purple and white tones of the urns.
Verdeia Tips
- Absolutely no hard water: even a single watering with tap water can weaken the plant — use exclusively rainwater or demineralized water and always keep 1 to 2 cm of water in the saucer.
- Maximize light to intensify colors: the characteristic white and purple marbling of Farnhamii intensifies directly under sunlight — a full south-facing spot in summer will produce the most colorful urns.
- Respect winter dormancy: place it in a cool (5 to 10 °C), bright spot from November to February — this dormancy is essential for vigorous regrowth in spring with new colorful urns.
