🌿 Green and cream striped foliage • ☀️ Indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌱 Very easy • 🐾 Non-toxic
Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of southern Africa, Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' is one of the hardiest and most adaptable indoor plants available. Its long, dark green, cream-edged striped leaves create a naturally dynamic arching habit, ideal for adding greenery to a shelf, low cabinet, or windowsill. A reliable choice among easy-care plants.
Once mature, it produces runners bearing small rosettes — the famous "spiderettes" — which are easy to remove for free propagation. Non-toxic to animals and children, it is perfectly suited to homes with cats or dogs — one of our non-toxic indoor plants.
Which Chlorophytum variety should you choose?
Three varieties of Chlorophytum comosum are available in our catalog. Here is how to tell them apart so you can make the right choice for your home:
- Chlorophytum 'Ocean' (this plant) — long, striped leaves with dark green and cream-edged variegation, and a very airy arching habit (H25 cm | Pot Ø15 cm). The most graphic and trailing version.
- Chlorophytum comosum Variegatum — long leaves with a green center and broad cream edges, with a generous arching habit. The classic and most contrasting version, with variegation reversed compared with Ocean.
- Chlorophytum comosum Bonnie — curly, twisted leaves, green and cream variegation, and a bushy, compact habit (H35 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The most original version, ideal for a sculptural effect in a hanging pot.
Light & placement
Chlorophytum 'Ocean' is remarkably adaptable when it comes to light. It thrives in indirect light but also tolerates partial shade and brighter spaces — provided you avoid direct sun, which can burn the leaves and dull the variegation. Finding the right balance between light and humidity is the key to maintaining dense, contrasting foliage.
- Light: indirect light or partial shade — avoid direct sun.
- Ideal locations: bright living room, bedroom, kitchen, well-lit bathroom, office.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C, away from cold drafts.
- Substrate: light, well-draining universal potting soil that is slightly moist.
Watering & care
This exceptionally tolerant plant copes equally well with missed waterings and brief periods of excess water. Its fast growth makes it one of the easiest species to care for in the catalog — the only rule to remember is to let the surface of the substrate dry slightly before watering.
- Watering: moderate — water when the surface of the substrate begins to dry.
- Drainage: essential — do not leave standing water in the saucer.
- Humidity: adapts to average indoor humidity; occasional misting in summer is appreciated.
- Fertilizer: every 3 to 4 weeks in spring and summer, using half-strength liquid houseplant fertilizer.
- Care: remove dry leaves to encourage new growth and turn the pot regularly for a balanced silhouette.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
- Ideal placement: high up on a shelf or cabinet — its arching leaves and trailing runners naturally cascade for a highly graphic, airy effect, perfect for creating a tropical atmosphere effortlessly.
- Pair with: a golden pothos for a bold green / cream contrast, a Chlorophytum Bonnie to play with two different arching habits — straight versus curly — or a Philodendron with broad foliage to anchor the arrangement.
- Ideal pot: light or beige ceramic, or textured stoneware, to bring out the green and cream variegation.
Verdeia tips
- Place it high up to reveal its full potential: set on a shelf or cabinet, its arching leaves and trailing runners create a highly decorative, airy graphic effect.
- Repot every 1 to 2 years: its fast growth quickly depletes the substrate — regular repotting in a slightly larger pot maintains its vigor and beautiful shape.
- Remove the plantlets to propagate them for free: the small rosettes produced on the runners root easily in a glass of water or directly in the substrate — propagating your plants without spending a penny is one of the great joys of indoor gardening.
