🌸 Single medium pink flowers striped with burgundy • 🌼 Heart of yellow stamens • 📅 Flowering from February to April • 🌘 Partial shade to shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -34 °C • 🌿 Evergreen dark green, glossy foliage
Helleborus × hybridus 'Dacaya' is a single-flowered Lenten rose, selected for its generous flowering and vigor. A European horticultural selection, propagated in vitro to ensure the variety remains true to type, it flowers in shaded terrace corners at the end of winter, when almost nothing else is flowering.
Its cup-shaped, medium pink flowers are striped with fine burgundy veins radiating around a heart of yellow stamens. From February to April, they bloom abundantly above dark green, leathery, glossy foliage. Supplied in a 19 cm pot and 50 cm tall, it is the largest hellebore clump in the catalog.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalog, taking turns all winter:
- Lenten rose 'Dacaya' (this plant) — single medium-pink flowers streaked with burgundy, from February to April. The most free-flowering, supplied as a large clump.
- Christmas rose 'Christmas Carol' — single pure white flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- Christmas rose 'Diamonfire' — single cream-white and green flowers with dusty pink hues, from December to March. The most vigorous, in clusters on red stems.
- Hellebore 'Angel Glow' — single frosted pink flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changing hues.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Pink' — double pale pink flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen White' — double snow-white flowers, from February to April. The brightest in shade.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Red' — double burgundy-purple flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- Majorca hellebore 'Purple Marble' — single cream-green flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Blue-green foliage marbled with cream.
- Silver hellebore 'Silver Dollar' — single cream-green flowers with yellow centers, from February to April. The most silvery foliage.
Christmas roses and Lenten roses, such as Angel Glow, withstand intense cold; hellebores with marbled or silvery foliage are chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Light & location
Like all Lenten roses, it comes from woodland: it prefers dappled light, tolerates deep shade and above all dislikes the scorching summer sun, which dries out the leaf edges.
- Exposure: partial shade or shade, with filtered light ideal.
- Location: north- or east-facing terrace, at the foot of a tree, shady courtyard, path border.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -34 °C — it stays outdoors all winter.
- Soil type: moist, rich in humus and well-drained, neutral to alkaline.
Its flowers droop slightly: on a step or low wall, the burgundy streaks inside the petals are easier to see.
Watering & care
Once established, it needs only moderate watering: check the substrate with your finger before watering to avoid excess, and in a pot, a few days away in summer can be planned for, as the substrate must never dry out completely.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate moist in spring and summer, and water very sparingly in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: apply organic fertilizer in autumn.
- Pruning: cut old leaves back to the base in December-January, before the buds emerge.
- Repotting: rarely — in a pot at least 25 cm in diameter if it has become cramped, in early autumn.
Wear gloves when pruning: hellebore sap can irritate the skin.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its vivid pink flowers brighten shady corners in late winter, at the heart of a bed of balcony plants suited to the same exposure that remains beautiful after flowering.
- For a woodland arrangement, pair it with a Korean fern — the same exposure, and its fine, evergreen foliage takes over after flowering.
- To brighten the base, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' at the edge of the pot — its cream margin brightens the dark green leaves.
- For an evergreen backdrop, place a Viburnum tinus behind it — its white flowers from November to March complement the pink at shrub height.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — the dark gray highlights the pink of the flowers and the glossy foliage.
Cut and floated in a bowl of water, the flowers reveal their burgundy streaks and yellow center, which cannot be seen on the plant.
Verdeia tips
- Remove old leaves in January: they hide the buds and may carry black spots. Cut at the base, they allow the flowers to bloom in the open.
- Do not move it once established: the Lenten rose roots deeply and flowers more abundantly when it remains in the same place for several years.
- Give it as a late-winter gift: in flower when bouquets are scarce, it blooms again every year. It is also a lovely idea for giving a plant in winter.
