🤍 Cream-white and green flowers • 🌸 Old-rose highlights in bud and at the end of flowering • 📅 Flowering from December to March • ⛅ Partial shade, tolerates gentle sun • ❄️ Hardy down to -23 °C • 🌿 Bluish evergreen foliage, red stems
Helleborus × nigercors 'Diamonfire' is a hybrid of the Christmas rose and Corsican hellebore, combining the large flowers of the former with the vigour of the latter. A European horticultural selection, it is one of the Hardy plants in the catalogue that bloom in the depths of winter.
From December to March, sometimes as early as November, its red stems bear clusters of cream-white and green flowers. The buds are tinged with old rose, and the flowers take on these highlights as they age before turning apple green. The tough, bluish foliage remains decorative all year round.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalogue, taking turns blooming all winter:
- Christmas rose 'Diamonfire' (this plant) — single cream-white and green flowers with old-rose highlights, from December to March. The most vigorous, in clusters on red stems.
- Christmas rose 'Christmas Carol' — single pure white flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- 'Angel Glow' hellebore — single frosted pink flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changing shades.
- Lenten rose 'Dacaya' — single medium-pink flowers striped with burgundy, from February to April. The most flowering, supplied as a large clump.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Pink' — double pale pink flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen White' — double snow-white flowers, from February to April. The brightest in the shade.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Red' — double burgundy-purple flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- Majorca hellebore 'Purple Marble' — single cream-green flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Blue-green foliage marbled with cream.
- Silver Dollar Hellebore - single cream-green flowers with a yellow center, from February to April. The most silver foliage.
Christmas roses and Lenten roses, such as Angel Glow, withstand intense cold; hellebores with marbled or silver foliage are chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Exposure & location
From the Corsican hellebore, it inherited a better tolerance for sun than the Christmas rose: it flowers better with light, as long as it avoids the scorching afternoon sun in summer.
- Exposure: partial shade or gentle sun; avoid full shade.
- Location: east- or west-facing terrace, home entrance, along a path.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -23 °C - it stays outdoors all winter.
- Soil type: fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral to chalky.
Near an entrance door, its white clusters remain visible even on the gray days of December.
Watering & care
It tolerates missed watering better than waterlogged substrate: a well-draining substrate enriched with perlite suits it in a pot, and browning leaf edges in summer indicate that it has lacked water or received too much sun.
- Watering: moderate - when the first few centimeters of the substrate are dry in spring and summer, greatly reduced in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: apply organic fertilizer in autumn.
- Pruning: cut faded stems at the base at the end of winter and damaged leaves throughout the year.
- Repotting: rarely - in a pot at least 25 cm in diameter if the roots emerge from the bottom, at the beginning of autumn.
Wear gloves when pruning: hellebore sap can irritate the skin.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its creamy white blooms and bluish foliage brighten winter arrangements: choosing its neighbors according to exposure makes it possible to pair it with plants that enjoy the same light.
- For elevated winter blooms, place a Laurustinus behind it - its white flowers from November to March echo the white of the hellebores, at shrub height.
- For contrasting foliage, pair it with a Korean fern — its dark, glossy green highlights the bluish tone of the leaves.
- To dress the edge of the pot, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' — its cream edging echoes the cream-white of the flowers.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — the dark grey brings out the white of the flowers and the red of the stems.
Cut at the end of flowering, once they have turned green, the flowers last a long time in a vase as part of a winter bouquet.
Verdeia tips
- Don't cut back the foliage in winter: unlike the Lenten rose, its bluish leaves remain healthy during flowering and frame the flower clusters.
- Give it plenty of light: in full shade, it produces fewer flowering stems. A spot that receives morning sun produces more flower clusters.
- Give it as a festive gift: flowering from December to March, it is a beautiful alternative to a Christmas bouquet and blooms again every year. Our guide to giving a plant in winter helps you choose one according to the recipient.
