What support should be installed for a passionflower? A trellis, pergola, wire mesh, or a strong stretched cable is suitable: the plant clings by its tendrils and can reach 5 to 8 m.

🌸 Trio of pink, white, and blue passionflowers • 🌿 Vigorous climbers on supplied stake • ☀️ Full sun to partial shade • 🌡️ Hardy down to -10 °C • 💧 Regular watering in summer • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
This Pack 3 Passiflora mix brings together three passionflowers with spectacular and complementary blooms: the Passiflora 'Purple Haze' with intense pink-purple flowers, the Passiflora caerulea 'Constance Elliot' with immaculate white, and the classic blue Passiflora caerulea with iconic filamentous corona. Native to South America, Passiflora are among the most spectacular climbing plants in the catalog.
Delivered on their original stakes, these three vigorous climbers are ready to climb a pergola, trellis, or wire fence. Their prolonged summer flowering and the unique symbolism of their flowers make them star plants for creating a flowering terrace with a strong character.
Which Passiflora to choose?
The Verdeia Passiflora catalog offers three varieties available individually or in packs. Here is the composition of this trio and individual options:
- Pack 3 Passiflora mix (this product) — trio including 'Purple Haze' pink-purple, 'Constance Elliot' white, and blue caerulea. Ideal for quickly dressing a pergola or trellis with three distinct blooms.
- Passiflora caerulea — the classic blue passionflower, blue and white filamentous corona, decorative orange fruits. The hardiest and most vigorous variety.
- Passiflora 'Purple Haze' — purple passionflower with intense pink-purple flowers, generous and long flowering. For a bright splash of color on a sunny wall.
- Passiflora caerulea 'Constance Elliot' — fragrant white passionflower, immaculate slightly scented flowers. For a pure and bright display.
Exposure & location
Passiflora enjoy generous sun exposure to bloom abundantly, while tolerating slight partial shade in very hot regions. They are always planted at the base of a sturdy support on which they will quickly climb.
- Exposure: full sun ideally, partial shade tolerated — minimum 5 hours of direct sun per day for good flowering.
- Location: at the base of a pergola, trellis, wire fence, or a wall facing south to west — ideal against a sheltered wall that retains heat.
- Temperature: hardy down to -10 °C depending on the variety — mulching the base is recommended in cold climates.
- Soil type: well-drained, fertile, neutral to slightly acidic — mix flowering plant potting soil + coarse sand to avoid any water stagnation.
Planted against a south-facing wall, Passifloras gain hardiness and earlier flowering — it’s the ideal spot to enjoy their spectacular flowers from June until the first frosts.
Watering & maintenance
Passifloras are vigorous climbers that require regular watering in summer, especially during flowering. A sudden lack of water causes flower buds to drop and is among the common causes of yellowing foliage.
- Summer watering: regular, 2 to 3 times per week in pot, as soon as the substrate surface dries — water must flow freely from the bottom of the pot.
- Winter watering: very reduced in open ground, almost none if the plant is dormant.
- Drainage: essential — always empty the saucer after each watering, roots dislike stagnant moisture.
- Fertilizing: potassium-rich fertilizer every 15 days from April to August to support continuous flowering.
- Pruning: light shaping pruning at the end of winter — remove dead wood and shorten overly long stems to thicken the base.
- Trellising: regularly guide young stems on their support using soft ties to structure growth.
Passifloras are very vigorous climbers that can reach several meters in one season — plan ahead by installing a solid and generously sized support at planting time; later will be too late.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
The Passiflora trio quickly dresses a wall, pergola, or fence thanks to its rapid growth and staggered flowering, and forms an ideal base for an easy-to-maintain flowering terrace.
- To dress a complete pergola, combine the trio with a Hydrangea petiolaris (Climbing Hydrangea) — the climbing hydrangea covers the base in the shade, the Passiflora take over higher up in the sun, for a layered plant cover from ground to roof.
- For a Mediterranean flowering scene at the foot of the wall, place in front of the trio a Lavandula Hidcote Blue and a Rosmarinus officinalis sur tige — the low heights and silver of the Mediterranean foliage balance the airy verticality of the passionflowers.
- For containers at the base of the support, tone on tone with the foliage, plant the three Passifloras in Elho Greenville Round Vert Feuillage pots Ø25 cm — the deep green shade of the container visually extends the foliage and lets the flowers occupy all the light.
- For a trio of containers with graphic contrast, choose three Capi Nature Skin Anthracite pots Ø17 cm — the dark background highlights the white, pink, and blue of the three flowerings without any color competition.
Plant the three Passifloras at least 50 cm apart at the base of the same support — their staggered flowering by one to two weeks depending on varieties extends the visual effect throughout the season.
Verdeia tips
- Install a sturdy support at planting: Passifloras cling by tendrils and can reach 5 to 8 m in a few seasons — a fragile trellis or stretched wire will quickly be overwhelmed, plan from the start for a robust and durable support.
- Never prune during sap rise: pruning is done only at the end of winter (February-March), never during active growth — late pruning weakens the plant and compromises the year's flowering.
- Check the pack composition: the three delivered varieties may vary slightly depending on seasonal nursery availability — the spirit of the trio (three distinct passion flower colors) is guaranteed, exact cultivars may differ.
