🔥 Deep pink flowers flamed with green • 🎨 Changes to green edged with red • 📅 Flowers until the first frosts • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy • 🪴 Very robust
The Hydrangea macrophylla Magical® Greenfire is the most graphic hydrangea in the Magical® series: its deep pink petals bear green flames, then the flower shifts to green edged with red at the end of the season. European horticultural selection (the Netherlands), developed from the crops of the Kolster nursery, it joins the hardy and resilient plants in the catalog thanks to its tolerance of sun, rain, and cold.
Where most hydrangeas scorch in full sun, Greenfire can handle a sunny position all day if watering is adequate. Delivered 55 cm tall in a 23 cm pot with 6 to 10 flower heads, it is deep pink flamed with green in midsummer, then turns green edged with red in autumn, right up to the first frosts.
Which hydrangea should you choose?
The Hydrangea plants in the catalog do not all have the same flowering or uses:
- Magical® Greenfire (this plant) — pink flamed with green. The most tolerant of full sun.
- Forever & Ever® — repeat-flowering: it blooms again on the current year's shoots, even after a harsh winter or an unsuccessful pruning. The safest choice for flowering every year.
- Magical® Revolution — flowers that change color from July to October, a variety awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society. The most spectacular in late summer.
- Magical® Jewel — starts lime green and finishes purplish red. The most contrasting in the series.
- Magical® Noblesse — almond green, then pure white, then bright green. The best suited to shade.
- Magical® Ruby Tuesday — from green to intense red. The deepest red in the series.
- 'Strong Annabelle' — Hydrangea arborescens with large flower heads on sturdy stems, to be cut back hard every winter. The hardiest.
- Hydrangea petiolaris — the only climbing one, for covering a wall in shade.
Exposure & location
Greenfire is one of the few hydrangeas that can tolerate full sun. Sun even intensifies the late-season red edging, provided the substrate never dries out completely.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade — in full southern sun, water daily during hot weather.
- Location: terrace, balcony, entrance, path edge, sheltered from strong winds.
- Hardiness in a pot: hardy — winter fleece protects the buds during severe cold.
- Soil type: moist, rich, neutral to slightly acidic.
In the morning sun, the green flames stand out clearly against the pink; in the midday sun, the red edging dominates.
Watering & care
A hydrangea exposed to sun drinks more than one in shade: testing the substrate with your finger every day in summer prevents dry spells, and browning leaf edges are the first sign of a lack of water.
- Watering: generously and regularly — every day in the sun during hot weather, two to three times a week in partial shade.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertiliser: fertiliser for flowering plants, from March to July.
- Pruning: simply remove the faded flowers after winter, in March.
- Repotting: into a wider pot the following spring, using compost for flowering plants.
A bark mulch layer on the pot limits evaporation and allows you to space out watering in full sun.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its pink-and-green bicolour colouring catches the eye from a distance: it finds its place on a balcony in full sun, where other hydrangeas would not cope.
- For a red echo, place a Photinia 'Carré Rouge' on a standard behind it — its young red shoots echo the flowers' edging above, and it stays evergreen in winter.
- To dress the base, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' at the edge of the pot — its fine foliage extends the green of the flames.
- For a light backdrop, install a Fargesia rufa — a non-running bamboo whose soft green highlights the mass of the two-tone flowers.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — the dark grey brings out both the pink and the green.
At the end of the season, its green flowers edged with red make very graphic autumn dried bouquets.
Verdeia tips
- Take advantage of its sun tolerance: this is the hydrangea to choose for an exposed patio. Our advice on plants facing heatwaves helps you get through the hottest summers.
- Let the flowers evolve: the transition from pink flamed with green to green edged with red takes several weeks. Cutting the flowers too early eliminates this second life.
- Protect it in severe cold: in a pot, winter protection fleece during prolonged frosts protects the buds that will flower the following summer.
