🌸 Single medium pink flowers striped with burgundy • 🌼 Heart of yellow stamens • 📅 Flowering from February to April • 🌘 Partial shade to shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -34 °C • 🌿 Evergreen dark green, glossy foliage
Helleborus × hybridus 'Dacaya' is a single-flowered Lenten rose, selected for its generous flowering and vigour. European horticultural selection, propagated in vitro to ensure varietal fidelity, it flowers in shaded terrace corners at the end of winter, when almost nothing else is in bloom.
Its cup-shaped, medium pink flowers are striped with fine burgundy veins radiating around a heart of yellow stamens. From February to April, they bloom abundantly above dark green, leathery, glossy foliage. Supplied in a 19 cm pot and 50 cm tall, it is the largest hellebore clump in the catalogue.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalogue, taking turns all winter:
- Lenten rose 'Dacaya' (this plant) — single medium pink flowers striped with burgundy, from February to April. The most flowering, supplied as a large clump.
- Christmas rose 'Christmas Carol' — single pure white flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- Christmas rose 'Diamonfire' — single cream-white and green flowers with dusky pink highlights, from December to March. The most vigorous, in clusters on red stems.
- 'Angel Glow' hellebore — single frosted pink flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changing hues.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Pink' — double pale pink flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen White' — double snow-white flowers, from February to April. The brightest in the shade.
- Lenten rose 'Double Ellen Red' — double burgundy-purple flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- Majorcan hellebore 'Purple Marble' — single cream-green flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Blue-green foliage marbled with cream.
- Silver Hellebore 'Silver Dollar' — single cream-green flowers with a yellow center, from February to April. The most silvery foliage.
Christmas roses and Lenten roses, such as Angel Glow, tolerate intense cold; hellebores with marbled or silvery foliage are chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Exposure & location
Like all Lenten roses, it comes from woodland: it prefers soft light, tolerates full shade and especially dislikes the scorching summer sun, which dries out the edges of the leaves.
- Exposure: partial shade or shade, with filtered light ideal.
- Location: north- or east-facing terrace, at the foot of a tree, shady courtyard, path border.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -34 °C — it stays outdoors all winter.
- Soil type: fresh, humus-rich and well-drained, neutral to alkaline.
Its flowers droop slightly: on a step or low wall, you can better see the burgundy streaks inside the petals.
Watering & care
Once established, it needs only moderate watering: testing the substrate with your finger before watering helps prevent excess, and in a pot, an absence of a few days in summer should be prepared for, as the substrate must never dry out completely.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate fresh in spring and summer, and greatly reduce watering in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: apply organic fertilizer in autumn.
- Pruning: cut the old leaves at the base in December-January, before the buds emerge.
- Repotting: rarely — in a pot at least 25 cm in diameter if it is cramped, at the beginning of autumn.
Wear gloves when pruning: hellebore sap can irritate the skin.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its bright pink flowers enliven shady corners at the end of winter: choosing neighbors according to the exposure lets you create a bed around it that stays beautiful after flowering.
- For a woodland arrangement, pair it with a Korean Fern — the same exposure, and its fine, evergreen foliage takes over after flowering.
- To brighten the base, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' at the edge of the pot — its cream-coloured edge brightens the dark green leaves.
- For an evergreen backdrop, place a Laurustinus behind it — its white flowers from November to March complement the pink at shrub height.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — the dark grey brings out the pink of the flowers and the glossy foliage.
Cut and floated in a bowl of water, the flowers reveal their burgundy streaks and yellow centre, which cannot be seen on the plant.
Verdeia tips
- Remove the old leaves in January: they hide the buds and may carry black spots. Cut at the base, they allow the flowers to bloom fully in the open.
- Do not move it once established: the Lenten rose roots deeply and flowers more abundantly when it remains in the same place for several years.
- Give it as a late-winter gift: flowering when bouquets are scarce, it blooms again every year. Our guide to giving a plant in winter helps you choose one based on the recipient.
