Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Croton Dreadlock difficult to care for? Its care is moderate — it is more demanding than the average houseplant, mainly due to its need for bright light and high humidity. Its main sensitivity is its reaction to environmental changes: once settled in a good spot, it is relatively easy to keep healthy.
Why is my Croton Dreadlock losing its leaves? Leaf drop is almost always related to a change in environment — moving, drafts, temperature shock, or sudden light variation. Place it once and for all in its final bright location and do not move it anymore. A slight drop after delivery is normal and temporary.

🌈 Spectacular multicolored foliage in green, yellow, orange, and red • 🌿 Thin, trailing leaves • ☀️ Bright light essential • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Codiaeum variegatum 'Dreadlock', also known as Croton Dreadlock, is a tropical plant with absolutely spectacular multicolored foliage, native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Oceania. Its thin, narrow, trailing leaves display a flamboyant mix of green, yellow, orange, and red that changes with the light and the seasons - a living picture in perpetual change.
The ultimate statement plant, its colors intensify with light. Pair it with Crotons and other tropical plants.
Which Croton variety should you choose?
The Codiaeum genus offers several varieties with distinct foliage - here are the varieties available in our catalog:
- Croton 'Dreadlock' (this plant) - thin, trailing leaves, a multicolored palette, H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm. The most original and exotic shape.
- Croton 'Wilma' - elongated, wavy leaves in vibrant colors, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The graphic, colorful version.
- Croton 'Mammi' - thin, curled leaves in intense colors, H60 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The version with a unique texture.

Why choose Dreadlock? It is the variety with the most original shape - its thin, trailing leaves evoke plant dreadlocks, creating a unique texture among Crotons. Ideal if you're looking for a truly different statement plant.
Light & placement
Croton Dreadlock is demanding when it comes to light - it is essential. Without bright light, the colors fade and the leaves fall.
- Light: bright to very bright light is essential - it tolerates a few hours of direct sun in the morning or late afternoon.
- Ideal: bright living room, conservatory, light-filled office, near a south-, east-, or west-facing window.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C - it dislikes cold and temperatures below 15 °C.
- Substrate: rich, light, and well-drained - universal potting soil with perlite.
The more light your Croton receives, the more intense its colors will be - green turns to orange and then red with exposure. In a spot that is too dark, only pale green remains.
Watering & care
Croton Dreadlock thrives in slightly moist soil and high ambient humidity. It dislikes sudden changes in its environment - stability, consistent light, and humidity are its watchwords. Proper watering should be adjusted according to how quickly the soil dries.
- Watering: moderate - keep the substrate slightly moist and let the top 2 to 3 cm dry out between waterings.
- Frequency: 1 to 2 times a week in summer, every 10 to 15 days in winter.
- Water: use room-temperature, filtered or 24-hour-settled water - the Croton is sensitive to limescale.
- Humidity: it prefers 60 to 80% - mist regularly or place it on a tray of damp clay pebbles.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half every 2 weeks in spring and summer.
When delivered or moved, slight leaf drop is normal - the Croton gradually acclimatizes. Leave it in its final location for 2 to 3 weeks before assessing its condition.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its multicolored foliage is already a composition in itself - pair it sparingly to avoid visual overload.
- Pairing: combine it with a Ficus elastica Robusta or a Zamioculcas - their uniform dark green foliage highlights the Croton's colors by contrast. Incorporate it into tropical plant arrangements.
- Ideal pot: a taupe Capi Nature Groove pot — its neutral natural shade highlights the multicolored foliage without competing with it.
- Ambiance: perfect as a statement plant on its own in a bright corner — give it room so its trailing leaves can fully express themselves.
Verdeia tips
- Stability is key — the Croton dislikes sudden changes in its environment, drafts, and frequent relocation. Choose its permanent spot once and for all, ideally near a bright window, and do not move it again. Each move causes leaf drop, sometimes significant.
- Its colors are a barometer of its health — leaves that turn green and lose their orange and red colors indicate a lack of light. Brown tips indicate air that is too dry or water that is too hard. Mass leaf drop indicates thermal shock, a draft, or improper watering.
- Wear gloves when pruning — like all Euphorbiaceae, the Croton produces irritating white latex when a stem is cut. This latex can cause skin irritation and is toxic if ingested — always handle with gloves.
- Toxic to animals — the latex contained in all parts of the plant is irritating and toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it out of animals' reach.
