💜 8 to 10 cm purple spheres • 🌿 Tall 70 to 80 cm stems • 🐝 Rich in nectar • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Hardy down to -25 °C • 🔁 Blooms again every year • 📏 Bulb size 10/12
The Allium 'Purple Sensation' is the most commonly planted ornamental allium in gardens: each bulb produces a straight stem 70 to 80 cm tall in May and June, topped with a perfect 8 to 10 cm sphere made up of hundreds of tiny purple stars. The species, Allium hollandicum, is native to Central Asia (Iran), and its flowers are among the most visited by bees and bumblebees.
These 10/12-size bulbs are planted in fall and bloom again year after year without being dug up. They are among the flower bulbs that are easiest to grow, in a flower bed or a large pot on a sunny balcony.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Alliums make the biggest impact when planted in groups: allow 10 to 15 bulbs per square meter, or 5 to 7 bulbs in a pot 30 cm in diameter.
- 15 bulbs: a flower bed of about 1 m², or two to three large pots on a balcony.
- 30 bulbs: about 2 m², for a flowering border along a path or terrace.
- 60 bulbs: about 4 m², for a real massed effect among perennials.
- 120 bulbs: about 8 m², for a large flower bed or a flowering meadow.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 120-bulb pack costs less than half the per-bulb price of the 15-bulb pack.
Planting & location
Plant the bulbs from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowering the following spring.
- Exposure: full sun, at least 6 hours a day; in partial shade, the stems grow long and lean.
- Depth: 10 to 15 cm, pointed end up, or about three times the bulb's height.
- Spacing: 15 to 20 cm between bulbs in the ground, 8 to 10 cm in pots.
- Soil type: well-drained, even poor or chalky soil; the bulb rots in soil that stays waterlogged in winter.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Plant them in irregular groups rather than in a straight line: the globes then seem to float above the other plants, as in a natural garden.
Watering & care
Alliums need very little: rainwater is enough in the ground, and excess moisture is what threatens them, as explained in our article about overwatered plants with damaged roots.
- Watering: minimal — water once when planting, then only if spring is very dry; in a pot, water when the potting soil is dry several centimeters down.
- In a pot: use well-draining potting soil mixed with sand or clay pebbles, as explained in our guide to substrates and potting soil.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in a pot, use bulb fertilizer when the leaves emerge.
- After flowering: let the leaves turn yellow and dry out in place; they replenish the bulb's reserves for the following year.
The leaves start to turn yellow as the flowers open: this is normal for alliums. Plant them behind low-growing plants that will conceal the foliage.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its purple globes tower over flower beds in late spring and pair well with ornamental grasses and sun-loving perennials, as shown in our guide to plants for a sunny balcony.
- To conceal its foliage, plant it in the middle of the trio of Festuca, Carex and Stipa ornamental grasses — the clumps hide the yellowing leaves, while the purple globes stand out above them.
- For a color contrast, pair it with the set of 4 ornamental grasses — the blue fescue and yellow sedge highlight the purple flowers.
- To extend the purple color all summer, add a Buddleja 'Butterfly Candy Little Lila' — its lilac flower spikes take over in July, once the allium has finished blooming.
- For a balcony version, plant 5 to 7 bulbs in the Elho Greenville Round foliage green pot in Ø25 cm — an outdoor pot with drainage holes, whose green color makes the purple flower heads stand out.
The dry flower heads keep their shape all summer: leave them in the garden, or cut them for a striking dried bouquet.
Verdeia tips
- Plant as soon as they arrive: the bulbs can be stored for a few weeks in a cool, dry place, but they root better if planted quickly, before hard frosts.
- Cut a few flower heads for a vase: trim the stems in the morning, when the flower head is half open. They last up to two weeks in a bouquet, leaving the rest of the flower bed undisturbed.
- Do not dig up the bulbs: left in place, they flower again every spring and gradually form fuller clumps. In a pot, simply protect the container during severe cold, as explained in our guide to cold-hardy plants.
