The Allium Purple-White Mix brings together purple-globed and white-globed alliums in a single pack. In May and June, their round heads 8 to 10 cm across, made up of hundreds of small starry flowers, open at the top of stems 70 to 90 cm tall. It is a European horticultural selection, supplied as graded size 10/12 bulbs that flower from the very first spring.
Mixed at planting, the two colors spread out naturally and create a purple and white scattering through borders. Among our flower bulbs, it is the most economical pack for filling large areas with alliums.
How many bulbs should you choose?
The mix is planted in broad groups so that the two colors intermingle: allow about 20 bulbs per square meter, or 5 bulbs in a pot 25 cm in diameter.
- 40 bulbs: about 2 m², to dot through a perennial bed, or two large 80 cm planters on a terrace.
- 80 bulbs: about 4 m², for an edging along a path.
- 160 bulbs: about 8 m², for a large border or the foot of a hedge.
- 320 bulbs: about 16 m², to naturalize a meadow or bring rhythm to a whole garden.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 320-bulb pack costs half as much per bulb as the 40-bulb pack.
Planting & location
The bulbs are planted from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowers in May and June.
- Exposure: full sun, at least 6 hours a day; in shade, the stems stretch and lean.
- Depth: 10 to 15 cm, pointed end up, or about three times the height of the bulb.
- Spacing: 15 to 20 cm between bulbs; mix the bulbs well before planting to spread the colors.
- Soil type: well drained, even poor or chalky; the bulb rots in soil that stays waterlogged in winter.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, with no protection, like the species in our selection of cold-hardy plants.
For a natural effect, scatter the bulbs over the area and plant them where they land.
Watering & care
Alliums live on their reserves and make do with rainfall in the ground.
- Watering: low — water once at planting, then only if spring is dry; too much water quickly leads to rotting roots under the bulb.
- In a pot: a well-draining potting mix lightened with a third of sand or fine gravel, with a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom.
- Fertilizer: a bulb fertilizer in spring, when the leaves emerge.
- After flowering: let the leaves turn yellow and dry in place; they rebuild the bulb's reserves for the following year.
Allium leaves turn yellow as soon as they flower: plant the mix behind perennials or grasses that will hide their base.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its purple and white globes float above perennials, in borders as well as in large pots on a sunny terrace, following the pointers in our guide to plants for a sunny balcony.
- To boost the purple, add a few Allium 'Purple Sensation' — their deep violet globes strengthen the purple side of the mix.
- For a taller tier, plant Allium 'Mount Everest' at the back of the border — its white globes at 1.2 m tower over the mix.
- To hide the foliage, place the trio of grasses in front — their soft tufts mask the yellowing leaves.
- To extend flowering, pair it with Buddleja 'Butterfly Candy Little Lila' — its lilac spikes take over in summer and attract butterflies.
For a terrace version, plant 5 bulbs in the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot, 24 cm across: its dark tone brings out both the white and the purple.
Verdeia tips
- Cut them for your bouquets: picked when half the flowers in the globe are open, the stems last about two weeks in a vase; change the water every two days to avoid the garlic smell.
- Keep the dried globes: after flowering they turn beige and stay decorative all summer in the garden or in a dried bouquet.
- Let them naturalize: in well-drained soil, the bulbs stay in place from year to year and form ever fuller clumps.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.

Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
