The Allium 'Miami' carries large semi-spherical heads in June and July, at the top of stems 80 to 90 cm tall, each made up of dozens of small, glossy red-purple star-shaped flowers. It is a hybrid of Allium atropurpureum, one of the few alliums with almost red flowers, here with larger heads and a longer flowering period. It is a European horticultural selection, grown as graded bulbs that flower from the very first summer.
Its deep, dark color contrasts with mauve or white alliums and gives depth to borders in early summer. Among our flower bulbs, it is the one that takes over from the May alliums, and its heads last more than two weeks in a vase.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Allium 'Miami' is planted in groups so that its purple heads form clearly visible patches of color: allow about 20 bulbs per square meter, or 5 bulbs in a pot 25 cm in diameter.
- 15 bulbs: about 0.75 m², or three pots on a balcony.
- 30 bulbs: about 1.5 m², to dot through a perennial bed.
- 60 bulbs: about 3 m², for an edging along a path.
- 120 bulbs: about 6 m², to bring rhythm to a whole garden of roses and grasses.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 120-bulb pack costs less than half the per-bulb price of the 15-bulb pack.
Planting & location
The bulbs are planted from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowers in June and July.
- Exposure: full sun, at least 6 hours a day; the purple is most intense in sunshine.
- Depth: 10 to 15 cm, pointed end up, or about three times the height of the bulb.
- Spacing: 15 to 20 cm between bulbs, in groups of 5 to 10; 8 to 10 cm in a pot.
- Soil type: well drained, light to ordinary; the bulb rots in soil that stays waterlogged in winter.
- Hardiness: down to -18 °C in the ground; in colder regions, a 5 cm mulch protects the bulbs.
Plant the bulbs among low perennials: their foliage hides that of the allium, which starts to yellow as it comes into flower.
Watering & care
Once in flower, Allium 'Miami' copes with summer heat and drought, like the species in our selection of heat-tolerant plants.
- Watering: low — water once at planting, then only if spring is dry; too much water quickly leads to rotting roots under the bulb.
- In a pot: a well-draining potting mix lightened with a third of sand or fine gravel, with a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom.
- Fertilizer: a bulb fertilizer in spring, when the leaves emerge.
- After flowering: let the leaves turn yellow and dry in place; they rebuild the bulb's reserves for the following year.
Cut faded stems back to the foliage if you are not keeping the dried heads: the bulb then puts its energy into next year's flowers.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its red-purple heads stand out above perennials and roses, in borders as well as in large pots on a sunny terrace, following the pointers in our guide to balcony plants by exposure.
- To extend the allium season, plant it after Allium 'Purple Sensation' — its lilac balls flower in May, then Allium 'Miami' takes over in June with a darker shade.
- For a contrasting border, pair it with Sicilian honey garlic — its nodding cream bells echo the round purple heads, and both flower in June.
- For a rose garden, slip it between white roses — the purple heads rise above the white flowers, and the rose foliage hides the yellowing allium leaves.
- For a terrace version, plant 5 bulbs in the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot in the 24 cm size — its dark tone brings out the purple of the heads, and its thick wall keeps the bulbs cool.
The dried heads keep their round shape all summer: leave them in the garden for structure, or cut them for a dried bouquet.
Verdeia tips
- Cut them for your bouquets: picked when half the flowers in the head are open, the stems last more than two weeks in a vase; change the water every two days to avoid the garlic smell.
- Plant deep enough: at 10–15 cm, the bulb is safe from frost and the well-anchored stems stand up to wind.
- Protect them in cold regions: below -18 °C, a mulch of leaves or straw is enough, as for the species in our guide to cold-hardy plants.
