🌸 Double flowers with three rows of petals • 🍷 Purple-burgundy edged with white • 📅 Flowering from February to April • 🌘 Partial shade to shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -34 °C • 🌿 Evergreen foliage
Helleborus orientalis 'Double Ellen Red' is a double-flowered Lenten rose from the Double Ellen® series, bred by Ellen Akerboom at the Nachtvlinder nursery in Ter Aar. A horticultural selection from Europe (the Netherlands), it is one of the few shade plants in the catalog to flower in late winter, beneath trees or against a north-facing wall.
Its flowers have three rows of almost round petals, purple-burgundy marbled with white along the edges, whereas most hellebores have only one. They open from February to late April depending on the weather, on upright 30 to 35 cm stems, above divided evergreen foliage.
Which hellebore should you choose?
Nine hellebores in the catalog, taking turns all winter:
- 'Double Ellen Red' Lenten rose (this plant) — deep purple-burgundy double flowers, from February to April. The most intense.
- 'Christmas Carol' Christmas rose — pure white single flowers, from late October to March. The earliest.
- 'Diamonfire' Christmas rose — single cream-white and green flowers with dusty pink highlights, from December to March. The most vigorous, in clusters on red stems.
- 'Angel Glow' hellebore — single frosted-pink flowers that turn deep pink and green, from December to March. The flowers with the most changing hues.
- 'Dacaya' Lenten rose — medium pink single flowers streaked with burgundy, from February to April. The most free-flowering, supplied as a large clump.
- 'Double Ellen Pink' Lenten rose — pale pink double flowers speckled with purple, from February to April. The most nuanced.
- 'Double Ellen White' Lenten rose — snow-white double flowers, from February to April. The brightest in the shade.
- 'Purple Marble' Majorcan hellebore — single cream-green flowers washed with purple, from January to April. Blue-green foliage marbled with cream.
- Silver hellebore 'Silver Dollar' — single cream-green flowers with yellow centers, from February to April. The most silvery foliage.
Christmas roses and Lenten roses, such as Angel Glow, withstand intense cold; hellebores with marbled or silvery foliage are best chosen for a sheltered balcony.
Light & location
The Lenten rose comes from woodlands: it likes dappled light, tolerates full shade and above all dislikes the strong summer sun on its foliage.
- Light exposure: partial shade or shade, with filtered light ideal.
- Location: at the foot of a tree, against a north-facing wall, in a shady courtyard, along a terrace border.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -34 °C — it stays outdoors all winter.
- Soil type: moist, humus-rich and well-drained, neutral to alkaline.
Hellebore flowers face the ground: raised in a pot or placed on top of a low wall, their center can finally be seen.
Watering & care
Hellebores like cool conditions but not standing water: checking the substrate with your finger before watering prevents overwatering, while a pot that remains waterlogged eventually causes suffocated roots.
- Watering: moderate — keep the substrate moist in spring and summer, and greatly reduce watering in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: apply organic fertilizer in autumn.
- Pruning: cut old leaves at the base in December-January, before the buds emerge.
- Repotting: rarely — hellebores settle in for years and do not like being moved.
Wear gloves when pruning: hellebore sap can irritate the skin.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its purplish burgundy is a rare color in late winter: it brightens a shady corner where nothing else is flowering yet, surrounded by balcony plants suited to the same light exposure.
- For a woodland composition, pair it with a Korean rock fern — the same light exposure, and its fine, evergreen foliage takes over visually after flowering.
- For bright contrast, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' at its base — its cream edge brightens the dark burgundy of the flowers.
- For succession of blooms, place a 'Eve Price' laurustinus — evergreen, its pale pink winter flowers echo the purple of the hellebores.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Capi Nature Groove taupe pot — a warm, light shade that makes the burgundy stand out, whereas a black pot would dull it.
Cut and floated in a bowl of water, double hellebore flowers make a spectacular table decoration that lasts for several days.
Verdeia tips
- Remove the old leaves in January: they hide the buds and may develop black spots. Cut at the base, they allow the double flowers to bloom in the open.
- Leave it outside: the Lenten rose needs cold to flower and tolerates temperatures down to -34 °C. Cold-hardy plants in pots only need their roots protected during severe frost.
- Don't move it again: once established, it forms a fuller clump each year, but does not tolerate being transplanted well.
