🌼 Golden-yellow double flowers about 10 cm across • 🌱 35 to 40 cm • 🌤️ Flowers in March-April • ⛅ Sun or light partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 💐 Lovely cut flower • 🔁 Flowers again every year • 📏 Size 12/14 bulbs
The Narcissus 'Golden Ducat' is a double daffodil in a uniform golden yellow: each flower, about 10 cm across, layers several rings of pointed petals, with one or two flowers per stem. Carried on 35 to 40 cm stems, they open in March and April. It is a European horticultural selection (Netherlands), which arose before 1946 as a sport of the famous 'King Alfred' trumpet daffodil.
Planted in beds, borders or large pots, it comes back every spring and forms ever fuller clumps. Among our flower bulbs, it is the double daffodil with the most intense yellow: its large size 12/14 bulbs produce big flowers from the very first spring.
Which daffodil should you choose?
- Narcissus 'Golden Ducat' (this plant) — golden-yellow double flowers, 35 to 40 cm, in March-April. For beds, large pots and bouquets.
- Mixed double daffodils — double flowers in assorted shades of yellow, white and orange, 35 to 45 cm, in March-April. For beds and colorful bouquets.
- 'Carlton' daffodil — one large yellow cupped flower per stem, 40 to 45 cm, in March-April. For gardens, lawns and bouquets.
'Golden Ducat' and 'Carlton' share the same yellow: planted side by side, they create a bed that is uniform in color but varied in shape, mixing double and cupped flowers.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Double daffodils make the biggest impact planted in groups of 10 to 15: allow 25 to 35 bulbs per square meter, or 6 to 8 bulbs in a pot 25 to 30 cm in diameter.
- 20 bulbs: about 0.7 m², or 3 large pots on a balcony or terrace.
- 40 bulbs: about 1.5 m², for a bed or a flowering border.
- 80 bulbs: about 3 m², for a long border or to fill the base of trees with flowers.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 80-bulb pack works out about 35% cheaper per bulb than the 20-bulb pack.
Planting & location
Plant the bulbs from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowering in March and April, depending on the region.
- Exposure: sun or light partial shade; flowers are more plentiful with at least half a day of sun.
- Depth: 12 to 15 cm, tip pointing up.
- Spacing: 10 to 15 cm between bulbs in the ground; 5 cm in a pot.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-drained; its only enemy is standing water.
- Hardiness: down to -20 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Plant them in clumps of 10 to 15 bulbs rather than in rows: in spring, each group looks like a bouquet set in the flower bed.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In a pot, the potting mix should never stay waterlogged or dry out completely during flowering.
- Watering: low — at planting, then in pots when the potting mix is dry on the surface, which the finger test lets you check in a few seconds.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut them off once they have faded, so the bulb keeps its energy instead of producing seeds.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow for six weeks before cutting it back: it feeds the bulb for next year.
Leave the leaves free after flowering, without tying them: they need their full surface in the sun to recharge the bulb.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its bright yellow lights up beds and pots alike, and it is one of the plants for a sunny balcony that flower from spring onwards.
- For a carpet of flowers at its feet, plant Greek anemone mix underneath — their small blue, pink and white daisy-like flowers, 10 to 15 cm tall, bloom at the same time, in March-April.
- For a contrast of complementary colors, pair it with the Broad-leaved grape hyacinth — its two-tone midnight-blue and sky-blue spikes open in April at the base of the stems and make the golden yellow stand out.
- To extend the flowering of the bed, slip Allium 'Purple Sensation' between the clumps — its purple globes, 70 to 80 cm tall, open in May, when the daffodil foliage turns yellow, and hide it.
- For a balcony version, plant 6 to 8 bulbs in the Elho Greenville Round pot in leaf green, Ø25 cm — its matte sage green extends the foliage and makes the yellow flowers pop.
In pots, plant in layers: the daffodils at 15 cm and anemones above them at 5 cm, for flowers on two levels.
Verdeia tips
- Cut some for bouquets: pick the stems when the buds show their color, then stand them alone in water for a few hours before mixing them with other flowers; they last about a week in a vase.
- Plant deep: at 15 cm, the bulbs anchor firmly and the stems hold their heavy double flowers more upright.
- Leave them in place for several years: like other cold-hardy plants, they can stay in the ground all year round; divide the clumps every four to five years, when the flowers become fewer.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
